Old Yale Wall Safe Won’t Open

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Old Yale Wall Safe Won’t Open

Postby frodoscobbler » 20 Feb 2020 21:41

Recently moved into a home and found an old Yale wall safe in our cold storage. There were instructions attached to the safe that I have tried multiple times with no avail. The instructions are:
1 - Start at 0 turn left one turn to 0
2 - left to 14 - 4 times
3 - right to 3 - 3 times
4 - left to 72 - 2 times
5 - right to open
I read elsewhere that some owners mix up their combination numbers so I tried every combination of these 3 numbers but still no luck. Any advice or pointers to get this thing open would be greatly appreciated.
P.s. I’ll try to upload pictures soon.

Just to be clear, let me describe dialing that combination.

First, ignore the 0 to the left stopping on 0 line. It can be done, but it is easier to just say it this way:

1. Turn the dial left (counter-clockwise) until 14 is at the dialing index for the fourth time.
2. Turn the dial right (clockwise) until the number 3 is at the dialing index for the third time.
3. Turn the dial left (counter-clockwise) until the number 72 is at the dialing index for the second time.
4. Turn the dial right (clockwise) until the dial stops turning.
5. Pull that little ring on the door.

When I say turn it until the number 14 is at the dialing index for the fourth time, it means you must start turning, and keep dialing past the number 14 three times, then stop on 14 the fourth time.

If that is exactly what you are doing, then let us know and we can tell you how to diagnose what may be happening.

Good luck!

Gordon

I tried that a few times and it still won’t open.
