Best questions to ask a locksmith?

I have a locked 1940s steamer trunk with no key. It was open until recently when my daughters friends closed the clasp. I can take It to a locksmith but I would like to make sure I’m taking it to someone with the appropriate skill level/experience. The trunk is part of a matching set and I’d like it to remain in good condition.
Any key *oh boy* questions I should ask the locksmith? I can upload photos if it helps (not keen on signing up for imgur account just for this one issue).

Firstly, find an actual brick and mortar shop, dont just call the first number in the phone book. Unfortunately, the locksmith industry is rife with wanna be locksmith impostors working out of the back of their car trunk and they often tell you one price on phone, then a much highet price after the job is done.

Ask if they can impression a steamer trunk key. Some locksmiths will have a wall of keys already cut to difgerent key codes and ready to try out. Is your key hole a flat slot or a z shape or a round hole with a post in the middle of it or something else?

Thank you for the quick replies. I’ll spend some time looking into local lock smiths. I tried to do some reading onlocks and trunks but will review the thread posted above. Still orienting myself to this forum. It’s a lot to take in.

Mention that "Peterboro" name thats on the lock face. Looks like it was a big mfg years ago especially in Canada. Looks like an Ilco T46 stamped steel key may fit it.

You want the old timey lock guy in town who probably has ten of the keys on a hook.

Check out any old shops that also do leather/luggage repair as they may be familiar with that brand.

A Long T-44, T-46, or T-47 should work.
