Old safe in wall

Hello,

I'm new to lock picking and this forum but I have bought a house that has a built in safe in the wall.
The old owner of the house had lost the key so it hasn't been opened for a couple of years.
Can anybody tell me if it is possible to open this safe, or that I have to get it out of the wall.
Please let me know if I need to upload more info or pictures.

I thought so, that the safe is located in Europe. Do I see it correctly, that the lock has no key post (a metal pin, which goes into a hole in the tip of the key)?

In my opinion this safe is probably not worth spending a lot of money to get it open for use. Most wall safes are rather thin-walled. You can probably guess how thick the door is by knocking. It might be worth to invest some money if you see it as historical part of the house. At the moment your only chance is to find someone from the Netherlands. I don't know anyone there who could help. If possible find someone who has special safe knowledge. Otherwise there is a big danger, that the safe is not repairable and it would have been cheaper for you to rip it out yourself. From a standard safe locksmith I expect to get such a safe open with at most one 6mm hole. A good one will pick that lock. If someone unpacks an angle grinder throw him out.

Depending on your skills and interests you might want to try to get it open yourself.

Double bitted lever lock. The standard and most common non electronic safe lock in Europe. Mention it to the safe tech when you ask for a quote.

I remember seeing one that looked almost exactly the same. That safe had a flat key, had a ward slot on the left, and had magnets in it. You put the key in and slid it to the left to open. I only saw it from the outside and never got to look at the mechanism. It was in a gas station and the owner kept his vehicle inspection stickers in it. This was 20 years ago. Good luck.

Was the key kept vertical in the keyway before sliding it over? Sounds like a cool safe lock!

The keyway is horizontal. The key was inserted horizontally with the ward cut on the left. It was then slid to the left with the front face of the safe going into the ward cut. Door pops open. Key moves back to the right until it can come out. This is all I can remember about it.

Exactly. Double bitted lever lock. In Italy we call them doppia mappa.

Raymond, you could have seen the GeGe MRT. It is (or was) used for safety deposit boxes. I can find online only this photo of the key:
