Core turning

Anyone know which part of the lock is broken if the core is turning with a key but the actuator is not?

What kind of lock? Padlock? Deadbolt? Pics would help a lot.

Also it only happens when turning the key counterclockwise and doesn’t happen every time.

I have my suspicions of what is happening, but will wait to see if someone who is more experienced with MTL or similar gear euro profiles has an accurate answer first.

Euro cylinders have a clutch mechanism that engages the tail piece.
I've seen these very straight forwards as a lug that gets pushed side to side but also very complicated (and fragile) mechanisms with loads of tiny springs.
It can't be fixed without taking it apart and sourcing a replacement clutch.

It happens that a key copy is just a millimeter or about 1/25" too short and the lock does not open reliably any more.
