Hello all and thanks so much for the add. I have come across an old safe and I am trying to find out as much about it as I can and havent found out much as of yet. I have been told that is more than likely a Wilder safe or a Herring safe circa 1845-1855. I have the key that I believe is to operate the bolt after the pushkey(which I dont have) is inserted .This key that operates the bolt also opens and closes a door or gate in front of the key slot that allows access to the key slot. I am looking for info as I would like to open the safe with as little damage to safe or lock as possible. In searching I came across a patent that describes the operation of the lock but since I have not seen any locks of this type before I am hesitant to say that this is the correct manufacturer of the lock. this patent can be seen here. Where are you located, safes don't always move very far, so a geographical locations can often tell where it was made and sold. are you USA Northeast? UK? Australia? Canada?
EDIT: The keyhole sure looks like a push key, but the location is not like a Wilder's Patent Salamander Safe with Grasshopper lock made by Silas C Herring like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7ZkD9TwRGs
Very interesting.
Some of our experts will hopefully chime in soon and let you know what it is.
