Replacing lock on Stack On Cabinet

Hello, all! New to the forum and I have some questions.

I picked up a Stack On/Sentinel 8-Rifle cabinet from a local pawn shop. Brand new unit, however it came with no key and the door locked. Stack On has been useless in responding to my inquiries regarding key replacement, and I’ve found it’s simple and cheaper to replace the entire lock than just order a key... so I figure that’s the route I’m heading.

If anyone has a better idea for opening the present lock than a heavy screwdriver in the tumbler and sufficient torque to break the wafers, please let me know

Regarding lock replacement, I’ve found a 2400AS-KA will fit without issue, but it is a tubular pin tumbler rather than a double-sided wafer lock. Is there a replacement that has the wafer lock instead and fits the same? Normally I wouldn’t care, but the door has a 3-point lock mechanism and I’m concerned the turning resistance will break a tubular pin key after time. This is a gift for my brother and I’d like to make sure he won’t have any issues down the road

That's very nice of you to get such a nice gift for someone!

Since it is a gun container though, we wont be able to tell you much in this thread on how to actually break into that lock, because we don't want to teach any useful tricks to any bored teenagers who stumble across this thread on how to potentially get into their dad's gun safe. If someone wishes to send you a private message using out messaging system, then that's ok with us.

Once you get it open, one of the more important measurements for a replacement lock will be the depth and how the cam plate attaches to the back of the lock, sometimes the way the double D knock out of the lock body and the cam on the back are out of sync by 90 degrees. Some cams have square holes which can be put on 0, 90, or 180 degrees and some are rectangular and can only go on the back of the lock one way.

Once you know how long the original lock was you can then buy something that will physically fit in that same space and perhaps something better than a wafer or tubular. Medeco and Abloy make lots of good stuff, and knock off Abloy locks such as ABA can be had on ebay for cheap.

That FJM lock you picked is a good choice by the way, it should work well without breaking that pin off.

Fair enough on the breaking in part. Basically, I’m asking what the wafer core equivalent of a 2400AS-KA lock is (link to lock included). That will fit with no issue. I want a standard key rather than the circle key, which will likely break moving the 3 point mechanism on the cabinet door.

*I will say that to store guns in a container using this lock would only stop children from getting in, it is not difficult to pick, but perhaps that is not a concern you have with it's location or purpose.

Are you already certain that the lock needs to be 5/8th inches deep? It would be best to remove existing lock and measure it.

It's not high security in the same way as a fire/burglar proof safe, but that lock is much better than what it came with or anything you're likely to pick up at any big box store. Make sure you get the one key pull variant. Also you'll have to slightly modify the latch to get that lock to fit. One option is to just enlarge the hole a bit, but on mine I opted to make an adapter so that I could put the original lock back if I ever wanted to. If you're interested let me know and I'll share more details on what I did.

Not sure which one off the top of my head but I replaced my stack on lock with a medeco I had lying around and it fit perfectly and is an awesome upgrade.
