? metal shavings a sign of pick / force attempt ?

Postby mastershave » 26 Aug 2020 22:39

I have a case locked with 2 differently keyed "No 3" master locks stored indoors.
Today the key for one of them had trouble opening, but wiggling it eventually got it.
Some metal shavings fell out in the process.
the padlock also really didn't want to relock, but a hard push did do it.
other than the metal shavings, I can't see any tool marks or scuffs.

Is this a sign of a pick attempt or just a 20+ year old "No 3" master lock falling apart?

It isn't a 5 UP model is it? Or does it just say No. 5 ?

It is hard to tell from photos but without knowing more I would guess that the lock is just failing.
I would replace both of them with something a little more well made if what you are locking up is valuable. If you are concerned that someone is picking it change the locks and add a tamper seal to the case.

Looks to me like the nickel/galvanized plating from the bottom of the shackle is peeling off-- the pic shows a worn area on the beveled part of the shackle, where it rubs against the locking plate (dog)

Picking will leave marks but not shavings like that.
