Source for glass plate?

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Source for glass plate?

Postby joejo » 29 Aug 2020 20:51

I have been planning a build for a while now and have sourced most of my parts, or at least know where to get them. Where do I find a glass plate? Would I have to have one made, or are they available premade?

For what do you wish to use the plate glass?

I would try a local glass supplier and have them cut a piece to dimension?

Link doesn't work. Just enter "glass" into the search field.

joejo, it would be great, if you could show us your safe design.

Sadly they do not have that much description of everything. The size of the "Euro-footprint glass suitable for Dudley safes" (when I read "Dudley" it always sounds to me like "dud") is given in the name, but the other stuff is a mystery unless you have one of the named safes. Glass missing the lock mounting screws is not that great, so I would try the "Multi-purpose AED glass" with the hope that it has the correct size.

Btw. they do have also boltworks, relockers, hardplates and handles. http://www.1010security.com/mm5/merchan ... _Code=LKBW

PS: Also stainless relocker cable

Because here is so much interest ...

There is a Dutch webshop, that sells M-Locks' stuff including bolt works (one lock, two locks, redundant, in M3 an integrated simple relock mechanism):
https://www.kluis-brandkast.nl/c-4426829/regelwerk/
The relocker is a metal tongue that is by default sticking slightly out and blocks the retraction of the bottom bolt work connection. For operation a lock must be mounted, which presses this tongue down and frees the passage for the connection.

They do have also Cawi/Wittkopp bolt works:
https://www.kluis-brandkast.nl/c-4434890/regelwerk/
Most of them have outrageous prices, probably to signal a necessity of a contact to get the real prices. As a lot of these bolt works have very specific glass plates they might also offer these.

I think I may try to find a glass shop that can cut and temper something for me, as I would like it to integrate with my hardplate nicely. I dont know much about tempering glass, so I'm not sure if it's something that can be done local or not.

As far a design, I have many ideas, but need to dial in some parameters to figure out what will work. It doesn't seem too easy to make something that is functional, looks good, is interesting, and wont have me standing at a mill for 6 months.

Tempering glass requires an oven that can reach at least 600c and can offer a flat surface. https://www.wikihow.com/Temper-Glass
It's a good day when I learn something new.

Ran the idea by the wife, and she asked the cost. I threw out $1500, and she didn't say no, so I guess that's a yes! Going to price some plate and a few othe materials, but I'm pretty sure I can do it under $2k, so that's close enough for me.

I want to have 4 way live bolts all rack and pinion. Thinking the drive system similar to the fort Knox 5:1 drive, but better looking and a pinion top and bottom to drive top and bottom bolts. All based off an unlined 60x30x20 gunsafe that will have 3-4 inches of ceramic wool surrounding it. Basically using the existing safe as a liner. Going back to work tomorrow and I'll probably cut the door if there is 1/2" plate on the rack.
