M530 CD Actuator reassembly

Postby Skoalart » 30 Aug 2020 13:33

Hello all, I am pretty new here. I have been picking for a few years now and doing so so at it. A few months ago I found a Master Lock M530 CD without a key while I was out walking around. I figured it would make a great addition to my practice lock collection. I had to spray it down with some PB Blaster to get all the parts moving, but it became a wonderful lock to paractice my skills (or lack thereof) So last week I got brave and decided to disassemble it just to see how it works with the supposed replaceable cylinder. In the process The lock fell over on my table and the actuator came out as well as the ball bearings. I have been to Master Locks website and looked at their technical manuals. I have not found this particular lock, but others much like it. I believe I still have all the parts, but no matter what I try I cannot get the lock back together properly. The lock will not relock. I have believe the actuator is not causing the ball bearings to retain the shackle. The ball bearing that keeps the shackle in the body of the lock is functioning correctly. I think I somehow need to add tension to the spring in the actuator, but the piece of the actuator that contacts the part of the cylinder that releases tension once open gets in the way. Maybe I can pick the cylinder to the open position and relock once I have everything set? I am just at a loss.

Here is all the pieces I have

and of course as soon as I took the picture above and put all the parts back in a box I lost the spring that pushes the shackle up once open!!!!!

The good news is, out of all the things you could have lost, the spring is by far the least critical. You can go buy a new one from the spring box at your local hardware store. Or you can leave it out entirely, you'll just have to manually pop the shackle when you unlock it, which is no big deal.

For the rest of the lock, try this to reassemble:

1. Put the shackle (with spring if you find or replace it) into the lock body. Push it all the way down to the closed position and hold it there.

2. Still doing that, flip over the lock body so the cylinder cutout is facing up. Hold the lock *perfectly* level. Drop the ball bearings in and use a small screwdriver, pen, bit of wire, etc to push each one into the little hole near the bottom of the actuator cutout facing each side of the shackle. The idea is to get them to engage the shackle on both sides at the same time. If one rolls out try holding the lock more level, and make sure you're holding the shackle in its fully closed position. If you can't get it, a small dab of petroleum jelly on each to keep them from rolling is a good trick.

3. Drop the actuator in. There should be a small tab to align it. Since it looks to be spring loaded and the lock is in the locked position, the two indents on the actuator will go into a position rough a quarter turn counterclockwise from the holes you pushed the ball bearings into in step 2 above.

4. With the actuator in, you should be able to release tension on the shackle. Put back the cylinder and retainer in the reverse of the way you took them out.

Demux, thank you for the reply.

I will continue to try. I feel like I am not assembling the three parts of the actuator correctly, though it seems to only go together one way. Luckily I found the spring and in the time being I can practice on the cylinder by itself.

Hello,

I've been having the same issue with one of these locks, the actuator fell out and I can put the lock back together, but it doesn't seem to work properly. Almost as if there isn't the proper tension anymore.
