Plain Vintage Safe w/Yale Lock... ID?

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Only one? In which direction do you have to turn to bump against it?

That's about right. I just wanted to make sure you weren't feeling a relock trigger.

Sounds like a friction fence, which the B30 L4R3L2 mentioned happens to be.

Except that the B30 has click detents around the drive wheel, so this one is not a B30. Maybe an OC5, or similar, which is a good thing for the op.

Lock seems pretty plain, and door is just ~1/8" flat steel. Not very high security box so a higher security lock would probably be overkill.

There is only one contact point (turning L, ie numbers going up). Any regular repeating noise when turning the dial is very faint and smooth, not like a ratchet.

Thought I might have found a second contact point last try. I started with turning the wheels 4L (previous charts had started 4R) and discovered another hit point, but it turned out to be two notches of slack in the dial. Is that normal? I am trying to picture where it would be coming from. From the shaft connection to drive wheel? A Fly tab, but connecting to what?

Also, results when starting to left were much less precise, harder to interpret, and not as repeatable as when I started with 4R turns.

The dials I see on google of OC5 look heavier, more machined, a little more vintage so maybe higher quality manufacturing? Insides of lock might match from the little peek I have when prying the door (which I will avoid doing for now, for the lock's sake. Though down the road... ?)

What do you mean with contact point? The "contact points" are not related to the wheels, so I am unsure if we talk about the same contact points.

What do you mean with play? Do you mean a shift in wheel pickup? With a modern S&G 6730 the wheel pickup in my personal notation is about +0.5 / +1.0 / +1.5. So if you turn 4L to 50 and then turn right there is the pickup of W3 after about a turn. But with +0.5 for the first pickup the dial need to be turned 0.5 numbers further, which is 49.5. One turn more to 50-1.0=49 comes W2. One turn more to 50-1.5=48.5 comes W1. Simple hand change and extremely old locks have something like -5 / -10 / -15. Sometimes the change is only in the drive cam with +1.0 / +1.0 / +1.0.

Safe is open!

Wound up exploiting the case (and handle) and not the Yale lock. Did have one number though not in right location, and was close a few times on a second, but last pass I had made wrong conclusion on second value so not getting anywhere when I decided to look for an easier way in. Safe is fine and I have working combo now too!

FWIW - It turns out to be 4R-3L-2R-L to open. SafecrackingSammy had it right. So lock is an OC5?

Thanks for the posts!

Great!

Yup, looks like one of the OC5s.
