Kwick Set Master pins sticking in bible

Want to learn how master keyed systems work? not sure what a Grand Master or a change key are? Want to share a new MK system you came up with? How do different manufacturers pin up their locks? It's 10pm, do you know where your wafers are?

Kwick Set Master pins sticking in bible

Postby Booney440 » 16 Oct 2020 11:58

I have 36 new Kwick Set locks that I am mastering the first lock went well other two locks the master pins are getting stuck in the top / bible. I am using Lab brand Kwick set pin dia. Is .115. The master pins getting stuck vary from #2 #3 #4. I need help figuring this out before moving on; I have never had this happen before. Any suggestion?

do you mean Kwikset?

With only 6 key depth, and a 7th depth when master keying, I'm not sure master pinning Kwikset is a great idea. Do you run an apartment complex or something similar?

If you can invest in something like Arrow or Schlage you'd get better results.

just my 2 cents

Are you replacing the driver pin as part of the rekey to match the total stack height of the Bottom pin/master wafer/driver pin allowed for the cylinder?

A long driver pin may be causing the issue.

Booney440:

Which method are you using to service the Kwikset cylinders ? Are you removing the bible top caps (preferred method) or using a follower ?

How large of a keying system is involved ? I use the Rotating Constant method of masterkeying when dealing with Kwikset.

Have you replaced all of the top (driver) pins with the "security" driver pins ? If so, one needs to be a normal top pin as it sounds like the cylinder is getting stuck due to alignment issues due to loading all chambers with the anti-pick top pins.

As Squelchtone suggested, I would recommend Schlage commercial or Arrow locks as they are much higher quality than Kwikset.

Actually using Kwikset will give you a huge MK system possibility even when eliminating all combinations using a #1 master. There should be no issues masterkeying them. We probably masterkey 40 or 50 a week for a local housing authority also using lab pins. Never a problem as long as you don't exceed stack height, which is common. Go with a .115 top pin and you should be good in all chambers.
