Capitol Industries Defiant magnetic padlock. .HEIC) Used magnetic field viewing film to see where the rotors in the lock were oriented and a small neodymium magnet to manipulate them. When the shackle is fully locked or fully open, the magnets attract each other, spinning the rotors so they magnetically line up, effectively scrambling the gates. .HEIC) Tensioning the shackle is critical and fairly difficult. The viewing film gives a decent clue as to when rotors are binding when you use a magnet to move them. When the lock is picked and the shackle is partly lifted, it holds the six rotors in place, and their positions can be viewed with the magnetic viewing film. .HEIC) Tip: if you use a compass to determine the magnetic poles of the magnet you are using to pick the lock, then once the lock is picked and the shackle is partly opened (to bind the rotors), you can see which of the two magnets on each rotor is polarized which way. .HEIC) No time to do so now, but with the viewing film showing you exactly where the magnets in the key line up to open the lock, and the magnet used to pick the lock showing you a “map” (seen in the above picture), it should be easy to fabricate a working key. More info to come in a month or so. Gordon

+1 on what demux said. Can't wait to see more. There isn't much around about magnetic locks. Cheers

Want to add info on Magnetic Locks. A couple years ago I installed 2 Magnetic readers, that when card with magnets in right place, would allow card to go 1/8" inch more to push a microswitch, to release a Strike. A Member asked if could be hacked, I first said No. The Cards have 3 magnets, other clubs cards I noticed 3 magnets as well, different positions, may also use more than 3? If you shine a light through the Card, you can see the 3 little square magnets. Before Installing, I took apart and saw 6 rows, and 6 columns(36 places where a magnet could go. So I got the Magnetic viewing film, cut the width of a card. Insert and withdraw, you can see how far the 3 lines(from 3 magnets) and what row where they are located. I had an Idea for a 3 dimensional.compass, then got one through Edmund Scientific, double gimbals, will point directly at drywall screw. Can also locate recessed magnetic contacts. I will add an additional Reed switch next to door Reed switch, but a little away so not triggered unless someone tries to bypass the door contact with a magnet(a Criminal) One of the Luthier Suppliers(Stew Mac?) now sells them, it is now called a pickup Polarity tool or something like that. Didn't check to see if the film could detect polarity. Or a difference. Not a lot of possibilities with 3 000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, 111 North being 0 South being 1

Nicely done! I have to read your thread on how this works, you're all very clever and determined! I love the eyes and smiley face stickers on that lock, too funny. Squelchtone

The used construction materials store had two railings for sale, with lockbox attached. I asked if the lockbox was deliberately included, and they told me I could have it cheap if I could get it off combination was ABC, and I got a bonus key out of it!

Indeed! I was trying full-on manipulation, and got the last letter C, and after like 20 minutes came around to wondering "second letter maybe C? or B..." and it hit me

Been out of it for a while, started making tools again and here we go! Edit: fight me, imgur app.
