Door lock bluuuues

Postby Fallen_Pin » 4 Dec 2004 6:16

Hehe, well, the mother beast locked my brother and I out of the house ' by mistake ' Luckily I keep an L rake hidden under the doormat, and part of my favorite pen makes a nifty tensioner. So I rakes the thing and after aboot (canadian eh?) forty seconds or so, plug turns, were in, life is good =) .
Now however, the lock doesn't take kindly to keys anymore, and will pop open the second I stick anything else in there =^o.o^= . Needless to say, mother dearest is pissed :D . I must have taken the bloody thing apart thirty times (interesting learning experience :)) and given it my coldest stares, but to no avail. It hates keys now (unless ya push it up, kinda pull it out, and turn allatthesametime) . I shwas wondering if theres anything I can do to fix it, or if I should just go buy a compatible core, re-key it, and stick it back in there when she's gone for a night and go "LOOK MA! The lock fairies came and made everything better!...Now get in the kitchen and make me some pie!" I've already tried lubing it =^v_v^=

You might have worn down one of the pins. If that's the case I would think the best method to fixing it would be to remove the plug, insert the key, see which pin or pins aren't level with the shear line, and then hand file a new blank to fix the problem.

Yeah, that sounds like a Weiser to me as well.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that you have loosened up everything inside the lock. It's not so much the pins and springs I would bet, as it is the linkage in the lock.

Lubing is a great start, but now you have to completely clean this bugger.

Check the plug, and be sure that the pins are indeed reaching the shear line properly. If they are not, take Towch's advice and handfile a new blank.

On the other hand, if the plug and core work properly, that leads you directly back to the locking and unlocking mechanism.

Reassmeble this lock so that everything is straight, level and tight. Not too tight, but tight. Check that the lock functions while not in the door. Then, lightly lube everything again, and assemble in the door.

Chances are that should fix it.

Problem solved everybody :D
Thanks for your feedback, I'm sure it'll come in handy, but we decided to just switch the front and back locks, seeing how the back door is constantly locked =) . I'm not entirely sure about the name of the lock, just.... a cheap.... lock that was raked in about twenty seconds =)
