Hello, New here and looking for some info. I have a chance to purchase a large old Cary safe that has been sitting in a garage around 40 years. The owner tells me it weighs between 800 to 1000 pounds but i think it is substantially more.He does not have the combination. Moving it will be quite the adventure. I am if anybody could tell me what type of combination lock it might have. I was hoping it would be a straight tail piece type but I don't think so after I played with it some. I can put pressure on the right handle in both directions and the dial doesn't bind at all. The dial does turn freely but a little stiff because it was 30 degrees at the time. I can feel it pick up all 3 wheels though in both directions. I'm wondering what kind of chance I might have figuring out the combination myself. Maybe. With research....and luck......lots of luck....and patience....and time. Did I mention luck?? https://imgur.com/gallery/1COOfqFThanks, Flatfoot1121

Nice safe! The lock is most probably a Yale Y6. You should be able to hear/feel gears when you turn the dial. The Y6 is a so called friction fence lock. With this friction fence lock the fence contacts the wheel pack only when turning right and it should be somewhere around 0 that it can drop into the gate of the drive cam, when all gates are properly aligned. It is not the easiest lock to start with, but it is doable. The key to it is persistence.

I messed around with the dial for about 10 minutes. It was very smooth in both directions. I didn't feel any gears at all. I'm not saying there weren't any gears, just that I didn't feel them. I could easily feel everytime it hooked the next wheel though.
2000 pounds!!! If I get it home, I'll put my hospital bed next to it so I can spin the dial while my back heals!
