Who invented the KIK cylinder?

It all started with Yale Linus Jr and patent US18169A in 1857. Look how far we've come. Post your patents here, discuss prior art, new designs, and various mechanisms important to the lock and lock picking world.

The title asks it all.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere, a long time ago, that Kwikset actually had a big hand in it (believe it or not). Not the pin tumbler cylinder design itself, but in the KIK format that involves placing one in a cylindrical lockset that is through-bored into the door as opposed to mortised in.

Yes, I was wondering what company came out with the design that has become nearly universal for all the others to use. I was expecting it to be Yale, Corbin, Sargent or Schlage..surprised to hear Kwikset!

Keep in mind my confidence level on that fact is not very high, and someone else may well end up correcting me. This is going back many years into past memory, and I've slept a lot since then. But yeah the fact that I recall Kwikset being a player in this is one of the reasons it stuck with me all this time, as I would not at all have guessed that either. If it had been virtually any other of the big lock companies I'm sure I would have forgotten almost immediately. ;-)

Show me where it existed prior to that.

It doesn't show anything resembling a KIK cylinder in that link, can you point out what we are missing? It looks like a door latch mechanism patent. Perhaps a different link was pasted than what you meant to share with us?

Thanks for clarifying,

Kwikset hasn't been in business long enough to have originated the KIK

OK, I see. That patent was for a non locking version. The wafer key in knob cylinder, also by Schlage came in 1927 I think. It is still used in certain Latin American markets!

Possibly the discussion turns around whether it was a doorknob with KIK cylinder or a two hole 'cylindrical' lock incorporating a knob with KIK cylinder and knob with push button on the other side. I had always thought Walter Schlage invented the KIK push button two hole lock in 1924. The original ones would have had a 8 disc cylinder with about 500 differs and a pin tumbler version would have come later.
