Weight of Mosler Safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Weight of Mosler Safe

Postby BCHS » 28 Dec 2020 10:40

Hello,

A local bank just went out of business and they donated their Mosler safe to us. I am writing an article for the newspaper and would like to mention the weight. I know it is at least 2500lbs because our skid steer could not lift it. We have lifted 2200lbs with it and this sucker didn't budge. We had to find somebody with a forklift.

Anyway, it is a screw type safe within another safe. I am attaching photos. I cannot find the serial number anywhere.

Thank you,

Nice safe!

Unusual to see a crank screw inner door but it probably was made special for the bank.

I'd guess 3-3500 pounds due to the inner compartment. No real way to tell unless you find a shipping/moving company with a drive on scale to weigh it.

Serial number is normally on the ball of the outer door handle.

Thanks for the replies. SN on handle is 162 434. This would make it 1902. Where is the SN for the inside screw type safe? I figure these were separate at one time? Seems like overkill to me

Thanks again

The outside safe is a fire safe, the inside safe a burglary safe. It should have been originally sold in that combo.

1902 seems about right....

The safe would have been all one unit when built.... The outer safe was fire resistant and the inner safe was for burglary protection. Modern safes can do all in one door.

The round finial on the screw door matches the SN on the outside handle so I assume they were made at the same time like somebody suggested. What is the 2620 on the lip of the inside safe?

Thanks again for all your help

See if that 2620 is listed on the inner door or elsewhere on the safe. Parts in those days were not made to be "templated" where the same part could be moved between assemblies on a production line. Parts were numbered like that so they could be kept together through the assembly process.

Sammy is correct, that is a production number for the safe. Parts are hand fit so they needed to be identified for final assembly of that specific safe.

Post a picture of the backside of the inner door. Does it have the time lock in place yet?

That is a very nice safe. I see it has the prerequisite petrified rubber band inside. Surely, there is a paper clip or two. lol My best find in a safe was a rare original Yale time lock key wedged in the corner of a National lug door safe followed by a 1894 silver dollar stuck under the door jamb of a Mosler screw door. Look closely with a mirror and use something thin to check under the inner door jamb of that compartment.
You call that a safe? Let me show you a real safe...
