Lost key for old instrument cabinet

Postby gs1512 » 21 Feb 2021 19:39

I hid the key to the wooden case for an old sextant a few years ago to stop the kids playing with it but have mislaid/lost the key. Is there an easy way to get it open without breaking the lock?
It has a central pin like an old cabinet lock but the diameter of the pin is quite narrow. Any guidance would be appreciated.

A picture of the lock would really help.

Thanks Joe. I don't have access till our COVID lockdown ends. The lock is similar to this one but the key was more warded.

Hope this helps, if not I'll post a pic of the real item though all you see is the centre pin that the key slots over.

The traditional answer w a warded lock is to get a "skeleton key" from a hardware store. You might have to check a few, to get a key that takes a center post. If not a hardware store, then some antique shops have old keys laying around.

Again, the old time answer is to find a key that fits at first, and then coat it w wax. Try it in the lock, letting the wards make impressions on the wax. Cut or file to fit, until you have a working key.

Let us know how you make out.

May be a Lever Lock, if you remember Manufacturer, would try that route first. They are custom fitted, and Bet Manufacturer of Sextant is same as Case, would Google
"Manufacturer and Key" may show up on eBay, or Images, mine uses like a Samsonite Key. Good Luck
