Accidentally locked secretary door using wrong key

Postby jpwhistler » 6 Mar 2021 14:36

Greetings!

After moving into our new home, a helpful relative was trying to match a wayward barrel type skeleton key to it's matching lock. The barrel fit onto the post inside the lock and, after some finagling, the lock was turned and the door locked.

Now, of course, the key will not unlock the bolt. If I hold the key "just right" I can feel resistance against what I'm guessing is the bolt spring, then turn it more and it will respond with a positive click, but will not engage the bolt.

The actual key is probably wrapped and taped in one of the drawers behind the locked door :(

This is a circa 1980 Jasper Cabinet Company secretary cabinet. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated...

Thank you!

If that key locked it, the real key must be very similar. Try angling the key while turning or get a key with the bit sticking out probably just slightly longer. That's my expectation.
Top-tip: test locking and unlocking with the door open. Happened to many of course.

Look for marks on the key it is just a warded lock and file where you see marks or get another blank and start over again impressioning it.

See you around the forum, enjoy!
