Help me with stuck plug

Postby Jakasmrd » 19 Mar 2021 4:42

I was trying to disassemble the lock to put two pins inside a lock so I can learn to single pin pick. But my stupid ass forgot to rotate plug 20 degres to left or right and now plug is stuck inside. I cant get keys out. What do you suggest I do.

Been there, done that. From your picture, where the plug is just barely out, it may be trapped the last pin only.
You can shim the plug from the back or pick the last pin. Try this: push down the last pin as deep as you can with a wire. Luckily you removed the cam so you have plenty of space to do that. Then you'll be able to rotate the key a little and free the plug.

Good luck and keep us updated :)

With the key in the cylinder he's probably got the #2 top pin stuck in the #3 plug hole. with the key in he wont be able to pick or shim at it. I wonder if he can do something with a key extractor? Does it have a top cap on the cylinder? (I dont ever mess with these locks, usually only commercial cylinders)

The pins are in number 1 plug hole and 2 plug hole from the front. Pin number 1 is almost out.

What did you mean shimming the lock. I have some Coca-Cola cans at home so I can probably shim the lock with Cola Can. But I have no idea how to shim it the lock. Can you explain, please?

You would basically be working a thin piece of metal (ie your coke can) inbetween the plug and the cylinder housing where the pinholes are located. Usually done by inserting a blank key in and working both the shim in and the blank key out to seperate the top pins from the bottom pins at the sheer line. There are a few youtube videos on how this is done. Shimming your style of lock would be difficult even without the key in it. With the key in it you are going to have to get something from the back side of the cylinder you push up on the the top pins that have now slipped into the plug.

Does the plug move at all when you turn the key?

And did you remove the 4 other top pins and springs?

I just left pin 1 and pin 2 in the lock. Other 3 pins and springs I removed. I just kept 2 pins in the lock because I am learning how to single-pin pick.

We need to show you how to properly show pictures. Those imgur links are to an Album, even if that Album only has 1 photo, the [image] command does not know how to show the entire imgur.com website.

To use [image] commands you have to Right-Click each picture and Copy Image Address,

which looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/ZCRBo5d.jpg

Then you would use

Code: Select all
  [image]https://i.imgur.com/ZCRBo5d.jpg[/image]

and it would show like this:

Hope this helps,

Alright I understand, Sometimes we forget to remove those springs. Will the cylinder plug turn at all? Lets say 5 or so degrees? If so you might be able to just shear off the springs. If not I think you are just going to have to fashion a thin wire and from the back try and push up the #2 top pin thats sitting in the #3 plug hole. Push it up and turn. Maybe a paper clip with a little kick up um the end?

Try sharply smacking on a piece of wood while applying turning pressure.

Sounds like the #2 top pin and spring have fallen down into the plug hole #3. Slapping it with a soft face mallet or piece of wood might separate the spring up and the pin down into the plug enough to turn, as previously suggested. If not you might have to drill a very small hole down from the top of the spring chamber to probe the spring to release it. The probe can be a very small diameter, springy wire with a hook that can catch the bottom of the spring, compress it up as you pull the wire, to make room for the top pin to move out of the plug.
Worst case you might forceably turn the plug and shear the spring. Won't be the first time I've had to do that either deliberately or accidentally.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Thanks for your replies,

In the end I tried to shim a lock from behind, didn't work so I tried hitting it with a rubber mallet while aplying tension didn't work. So because is a Euro cylinder I just ended cutting a lock in two parts. One part is still working like a normal lock and the other one I kep as a reminder to turn the core left or right whille pulling it out.
