Pro-Lok vs HPC hook profiles

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Pro-Lok vs HPC hook profiles

Postby Peter Martin » 6 Aug 2020 16:54

There's a big difference in simple hooks.
These from PRO LOK were only $2.50.
The HPC is much better finished and is smaller. The PRO LOK shape seems much more crude in design.
Both are the same thickness.
I can't judge the metal quality yet.
However, I will be reshaping the PRO LOK picks to thin them down to a profile shape similar to the HPC.

Thanks for this!

Would also be super interested in seeing a comparison between Southord, Sparrows, Peterson's standard short hooks (and any other manufacturers I'm not thinking of).

Would do the comparison myself if I owned hooks by more than just one of these manufacturers.

This also reminds me that I saw some broken key extractors (the hook kind) from Pro-Lok that right out of the box were so dull that there is no way they would extract anything. There was no barb at all to them. They would definitely need to be sharped up before use. I generally like Pro-Lok, but -some- of their products could use a little more attention to detail.

I’m pretty sure I own a couple of each of these. Both are spring steel, which is very strong. Pretty sure both are .025”.
The Pro-Lock is definitely not as refined as the HPC. Neither are smooth, and should be sanded and polished if you want it to glide in and out of the keyway smoothly.
The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, can not and will not ever harm the sheep.

HPC picks are also cheaper than Pro-Locks are, which only adds insult to injury

HPC LPX-12 hook is .022 thick
