I recently acquired a used HPC Code-A-Key with several different wheels, and several dozen cards to go with it. It seems to be in good shape and cuts well, but I’m having a problem. I can’t get the cutting wheel off. Obviously, I unscrewed the reverse threaded retention nut, but even if I lock the bolt with a wrench, the cutting wheel just spins freely on the bolt and won’t release. I’m really hoping I’m just doing something wrong, and it wasn’t damaged when I got it. Thanks in advance for any help.

I moved this to the “Key Machines” area, hoping that someone knows this exact machine and what might be the problem.
So the cutting wheel can spin freely on its bolt, but not be pulled off the bolt in axial direction?

That is correct. There’s no play or wiggle in the wheel either.

Sounds like there is some corrosion between the wheel & the bolt, have you tried a little spray lube?

There might be some buildup on the shaft or the nut may have swelled the metal at the end of the threads. Is there ANY movement laterally? If so try some VERY fine abrasive cloth or sand paped just on the last of the shaft next to the wheel. Also maybe try a gear puller to put even and straight pressure to pull the wheel.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Try an open end wrench, Maybe use another Combination Wrench to smack sharply the other. CW, or CCW, whichever the case.

If you got it, you might could adapt a puller. Or, if you have room behind the wheel, then with a strong flat piece of metal across the end of the shaft, and use 2 C clamps, and tighten both slowly, evenly, occasionally taping on the end of the shaft.
