How trapped is trapped? Mila euro cylinder circa. 1990

Postby JNugs » 22 May 2021 9:11

Hi folks.
Surprised this isn't a common thread tbh, but not found much help in the search...
So I got my lockpick set off Amazon as it was suggested as a good way to work on my manual dexterity after an illness. Got through the practice locks that came with it very quickly and decided to have a go at the back door...
I was overjoyed when it raked open obscenely easily but, having never heard of trap pins, got to 180° and CLUNK!
I've tried picking passed it but it doesn't seem to want to go.
Any links or suggestions GREATLY appreciated!
Fortunately I did it from the inside so we can still secure the house, just a bit of a PITA. I knew I should have waited for the books to arrive...
Thanks in advance.

Hello and Welcome to the forum!

Your lock got 180'd ("one eigthy'd or one eightying a lock") it is common and there are threads for it =)

It happening because you're still learning and are not aware of certain things that happen to a lock cylinder when it is turned without a key.

Here is an old thread with nice photos:

This video will help explain the problem:

And I know you said your lock is still secure, but this is one of the reasons we preach the good word of Locksport when we tell new pickers not to pick their house locks because things can go wrong and panic can set in.

I'm honestly not a fan of Amazon pick sets, and highly recommend you move onto something from Southord, Sparrows, Peterson, or other brands on your side of the pond.

Happy Picking!

It has been a while since we had a 180 thread here. I wonder how many new pickers get into trouble because of it.

Over the last 30 years I have found several stores using Adams Rite style locks that were broken into(picked open) that had the 180 problem, most of them were still able to get the doors open & the place robbed anyway

Thanks for that, all sorted and my pride will recover LOL.
Good tip on not playing with the house locks. Should have waited for the practice ones to arrive, though I'm finding they're not really a fair approximation of real ones are they?!
I've now bought some padlocks and ordered a bunch of old door locks from eBay to fiddle with.
I'm quite interested as to how challenge locks are made so that's my next bit of research.
Soon as I'm confident I will certainly be upgrading the house locks as it really was disgustingly easy to open.
I've also ordered a few decent picks and levers as I really do see what you're saying about the Amazon jobs, although I've managed to pick everything I have with them so not doing too badly.
Can safely say I'm utterly addicted, it's such a relaxing pastime!

Happy picking all...
