Source for cam core/cylinders

Postby 2002sheds » 6 Jun 2021 21:57

Hi All,
After getting great advice about re-keying some cam locks on storage hatches on a 1978 Airstream, I am hoping to go back to the well and ask for any advice in finding suppliers for a core/cylinder that would fit the main door, which is missing the entire cylinder save the last 1/2 inch.

It seems fair to say that the cylinder was/should be 1/2 inch in diameter, and looks as if it was/should be about 1-3/8" long. The latch was made by Keeler and used on many doors back then, so I am hoping to find this item somewhere...

The pics below are of the latch (identified as item #35151) and two pictures of what is left of the original core/cylinder. Any help will again be greatly appreciated!

You may want to join an Airstream restoration group on Facebook (I'm sure there's such a thing) and I bet parts are traded bought and sold on the regular. Here's a group I found https://www.facebook.com/groups/airstreamrestoration

Here's a specialty website selling vintage parts, maybe reach out to them for the cylinder you need https://vintagetrailersupply.com/blog/common-vintage-trailer-door-locks/

This place sells some sort of repair kit for those Keeler locks, doesn't seem to include a cylinder, but worth contacting them https://odmrv.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1035

Here's a whole lock with cylinder and keys for $517 on ebay.. wow that's pricey! https://www.ebay.com/itm/203338472589

and lastly, here's photoI found on google image search, in case it helps in your search

in my searches, the name Bargman came up a lot as the maker of the lock cylinder for that Keeler lock mechanism, Hudson Lock came up as well.

Good luck!

Hi Squelch,
Great info -- thanks! I belong to Airforums, which is fantastic, but I checked out the Facebook group and am likely to join it as well. I also appreciate the tip that the latch and cylinder is/may be Bargman. Bargman definitely made door latches leading up to that year, and there is a fairly strong possibility that some remaining stock was used as they transitioned to Keeler in 1977 and 78. Based on the photo of the cylinder that you posted, it sure looks that way.

I will scour these resources and report back on what I find. Thanks so much !!

I have some Bargman locks that were old when I put them on the shelf--I can't believe someone on Ebay is gonna sell one for over $500!

Hi Bill,
Might you have a spare cylinder for sale? I did some more research and have confirmed that the latch was made by Keeler Brass. The cylinder looks like the one that Squelchtone posted — round, not with a protrusion along one side... and the pin at the back sticks out only a quarter inch or so...

Thanks,
David

I will take a look around in the shop. I do remember that among the removable lock cylinders we did have, yours was always the longest--it isn't a common size by any means. Also if you find a cylinder you'll still hafta address (repair) the issue that caused the original cylinder to break in the first place

Hi Bill,
I am grateful that you’ll look, and I will definitely service the latch so that it performs well and doesn’t present issues. I can confirm that the cylinder length is right about 1-1/2 inches long...

Thanks,
David

I have a replacement cylinder for your lock, as I also have a replacement lock like yours I took the original cylinder out and my replacement does work it. You'll need to clean/lube the lock so the cylinder works easily or the pin will snap off. These locks were originally greased with lithium grease, which turns into paste over time--especially in Arizona when combined with heat

Hi Bill,
Fantastic! I will definitely lube the daylights out of it and clean the whole assembly (I have already removed mine from the Airstream).

How much would you like for the cylinder, and how should I pay you? I can pay via Paypal, Venmo, Zelle or most anyway that you'd like -- I can even send a check and you can wait for it to clear before shipping :-).

My mailing address and other info are below. Thanks again!
