AMSEC Safe w/ "PSP" Mechanical Lock

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Before you go changing the combination, if you have a chance could you please take the cover off the back of the lock, dial the combination normally LRL and then back to zero, and get a good close-up picture of the lock mechanism to share?

Here is the lock after dialing LRL. As you can see, the disks don't even line up anywhere near the gate (except for maybe the middle one?).

Now that I've thought about it more, I believe the unsusual RLR dialing method is what I have always used to open this safe. I just didn't notice until recently when I failed opening it for the first time in a while.

So my final guess is that the lock was just set up the "wrong" way when I bought it, probably because the 3rd number of the combo I asked for was near the forbidden zone, and the locksmith probably did something to make it work with this, rather than tell me to choose a different combo.

Either way, it defeats the purpose of having a 3rd number in the combo, since you don't need to actually stop at it...

Did you dial 4xR, 3xL, 2xR, 1xL, R to stop? Or 4xR, 3xL, R to stop?

The way it seems to work is 3xR, 2xL, 1xR to stop. In other words: Pass 1st number three times going Right, stop on 1st, pass 2nd number twice going Left, stop on 2nd, pass 3rd number once going Right and keep on turning until the drive wheel engages. No need to stop on the 3rd number because you're already going Right to engage the drive wheel.

If I have time this weekend, I might be able to make a video showing the inside of the lock as I turn the wheel to open it.

That looks like 1st and 2nd wheel are same number. The third wheel is the 2xL. Is than in the forbidden zone?

Hmm... I'm not too knowledgeable about which combo number corresponds to which wheel. The 1st and 2nd numbers of the combination are definitely nowhere near the forbidden zone.

The 3rd (last) number of the combo is between 10-20, and for this particular lock I'm not sure if that is technically "in" the forbidden zone, but it sure must be close... :(

However, if the lock was set up differently than how I asked, (and like you suggested, with the possibility that two of the combo numbers are actually the same), that might explain why the 3rd number doesn't seem to have any effect, essentially making the lock behave as if there are only two different combination numbers. But again, I've only begun to research/learn how these locks work, so I might just be talking nonsense here...

BTW when you say "looks like 1st and 2nd wheel are same number" are you referring to the 1st photo I posted? Each disk seems to be made out of 2 plates each connected to each other, so if you are referring to the 1st photo those plates that line up are part of the same disk.

Well, no wonder! That would explain why it wasn't working. You may indeed want to change that combination, or at least the last number, and start dialing left right left.

Hope I didn't miss it, or someone already said, did you try dialing the correct direction and see what the combo is as gates are under the fence?

It looks like the OP has not logged in since January 26th. I don't think they'll see your reply unless they Subscribed to this thread.
