Mosler field safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

I’m trying to identify the serial number foe this safe. We recently moved into a new home and this was in the basement.

Nice find!

What are you going to do with the serial number? Ask the company the original combination? If so, it's unlikely.
If you need to get the safe open and don't know the combination, look for a safe tech and bring him the safe. You need a safe tech and not a general locksmith, they are two different jobs, and even if sometimes a locksmith is able to open safes, it's better to get a tech specialized in safe opening.
The savta website is a good start to find one in your area http://www.savta.org/savta_tech.php

Good luck :)

Nice safe. You might try the standard combination: 50-25-50. Dialling is normal, just like with an S&G 6730.

I bet you when it was demilitarized, it was set to 50-25-50, or 50-50-50, but that looks like the MR302 "click click " lock with the clicking ball detent at 0 which makes dialing a little more interesting for those who are not familiar with the anti manipulation click.

OP: Have you considered calling the lock shop listed on that sticker? Maybe tell them you just bought the house, and this Mosler field safe is in the (closet, basement, garage) and they may have record of what they set the combination to if they serviced it in the past.

and femurat is right, not much you're gonna do with a serial number on a safe like this. The combination will not be listed anywhere and has surely been changed since it was made. Mosler is also out of business since the late 1990's and Diebold who bought the remnants of the company will not have any useful info to give you.

The serial number will be on the right hand side of the drawer when opened. It wont help in finding a combination.

It appears to be a red label so made after October 1990.

50-25-50 or just 50 if it was decommissioned thru DRMO but it may have been changed.

Sadly enough, unless it opens on one of the default combos or you get lucky, that safe will be pretty hard to drill. The RED label means it was produced just before Mosler sold the blueprints to Diebold in 90. The red label also means they are using some of the newer hardplate and a diamond core drill bit will probably be necessary to drill it. What I am hinting at is that it may be cost prohibitive to have it opened.

If you know someone with an automatic dialer try to borrow it or bring them the safe. You can also make a chart so you don't lose your place and dial all the combos. I have heard they are pretty hard to manipulate.

They are great little safes to have so Best of luck!

You might research past owners, latest first, tell them you will give them $100 for a working Combo?

Stratmando's idea is novel. If the safe shop doesn't have the combo, then this is a cheap and good idea.

That's a nice little field safe. As others have said, it is a red label which means it will be harder to drill (if that's what it comes to) and won't be cost effective at all. Try all wheels left 50 and also 50-25-50. I wish you luck.
