Old Marvin Safe Co. opening project

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Old Marvin Safe Co. opening project

Postby CDD » 15 Jul 2021 8:46

Hi All - I purchased a building with a safe included, as it was built into a room and could not be removed without damaging some walls. I can't find a s/n plate, but the dial shows Marvin Safe Co. New York N.Y., along with patents dated 1871 - 1882. The safe is approximately a 30" cube with metal wheels.
Being a geek, I would like to set up a dialer and see if I can open it. It would help if I knew the likely procedure, as in 4 turns to the left, 3 turns to the right....
Any help would be appreciated!

Here's a closeup of the dial:

I don't have an overall pic of the safe, but I will get one. The dial is centered on the face, the handle is on the left, horizontal with 2" rods on each side, and the two hinges have decorative pins.

Found a place on Lockreference.com, a Yale and Towne area had a photo of Yale 026/027, or 027/028, and looks like wheel pack is on back cover. Couldn't relocate photo, but is there.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Learning manipulation with a Sparrows kit, we'll see how good my fingers are :)

Hi Folks,

I got her open. I was able to find that there were 3 wheels, so a 3 number combo. I did some manipulation and got some clues, but was unable to open it manually. I built an auto-dialer which opened it in 2 days (on the third try). Alas, no gold bars.

So, I have a couple more questions. First, the dialer's shaft coupler snapped when it opened the safe due to the hard stop when moving the bolt. That caused the dialer to keep dialing, so it did not report the combination to me. I would like to remove the rear cover to look at the mechanism (or remove it) to determine the combo. There is a 3" diameter knurled cover, which I presume I should remove by taking out the locking screw and rotating CCW. Does that sound right? Second, there are 3 locked drawers in the safe, and of course no key(s). I don't find any tumbler pins - might this be a wafer lock? Any help in gracefully opening those locks would be appreciated. The internal locked compartments could be opened pretty easily by pulling the drawers apart, but I'm trying to keep the safe intact.

Images of the key locks, the dialer, and the rear of the safe lock are found at https://imgur.com/a/tsm1mXQ.

Thanks for your help!

Well done!

As there is only one screw in the round disc I think it should be turned then slightly left or right before removing it. This thing is called "curb". On this thing is the wheel pack. Each wheel should show the number to which it is set.

The locks of the inner doors are lever locks. The easiest is probably to impression the keys.
