Problems with S&G 2740B

Postby MartinHewitt » 5 Aug 2021 6:47

I do have here a 2740B from a friend. It was made in 2018 and was basically a NOS. I have also one and no issues with it, but this one is making me (and him) problems. Calibration to 0 works. Opening with 50-25-50 results in an error (single brap) and more sooner than later gives the 10 minute delay. It is unlikely, that someone changed the combo to something else, but possible. So I tried the recovery procedure too. I got also an error (single brap) after I dialled the serial. I rechecked the serial and it is the same in the cover and next to the bolt. It is probably impossible that someone changed the serial. So any idea what I could try to get it working?

Hi Martin,

You could try to call or email S&G technical support. I am not sure if they will talk with you unless you are an authorized S&G reseller.

The chances, that S&G will help me as a non-US, non-government person are probably zero.

PS: Connector looks good. Will try to remove the battery for a while.

Recalibrated dial multiple times.
Checked dial orientation.
Checked connector pins.
Checked serial number.
Removed, waited, reinserted batteries.

An attempt to dial 50-25-50 results always in an error and after multiple times in a 10 minute wait.
An attempt to dial the recovery procedure does often result in an error after dialling the serial, but sometimes the 3 beeps before the serial won't happen and the lock is then generally unresponsive until there is after a minute or two a brap.

I don't think there is anything left I could try.

Put in my dial and got it open at the second attempt. So it is possibly a mechanical problem. The spacing of the numbers does not that even on both dials. Or maybe I am dialling to fast. I'll try a few things.

I get the lock reliably open with 49 3/4 - 25 - 49 3/4 to 48 3/4 - 25 - 48 3/4. And the 25 in the range of -/- 1/4. Recovery combo works with slight modifications too. Great, that this lock is not borken.

And here a photo of the dial :D

Spacing is different on his and my dial.

The calibration of this lock stored precisely by the position of 0. But the combination seems to be stored as numbers evenly distributed around the dial. So directly opposite of 0 is 50. When I set a new combination and dial there 50 it detects, that it is a 50 and puts the center of this 50 directly opposite of 0. So I could dial perfectly to 50 while setting the combination, but the center was always of. The original, true 50 was 48 3/4 - 49 3/4 on this dial. When I set the combination to 50 it became to the lock 51, which was on this dial 49 3/4 to 50 3/4. To have a usable, better centered combination I changed the 51-26-51 back to probably a true 50-25-50 and changed instead the calibration to about 0 1/2. The serial doesn't work for recovery with this tweak. This lock costs nearly a thousand dollars and they can't make an evenly numbered dial. A week ago this was my favorite electronic lock. Now, I am not so sure. Maybe this botched dial explains, why they are so rare and the X locks so common.
