Old Victor Safe - door only opens about an inch

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Old Victor Safe - door only opens about an inch

Postby hodag68+ » 24 Aug 2021 14:13

I have an old safe from The Victor Safe & Lock Company that has been working for years. This morning after entering the 4-digit combination the door only opens about an inch.....feels like there is something blocking the door at the hinge-side. When I slide a fairly thin piece of mylar in at the hinge side it seems to hit something at the middle of the hinge side and with a little pressure it slides past something but the door still won't open. I can close and lock the door and I can enter the combination to open, but the door still only opens about an inch. I can see the two pins on the side of the door opposite the hinges. Any suggestions???

Pics would be nice.

Sounds like a bolt disconnect or something fell in the door.

If it opens an inch, should be able to get a phone camera in there.

I might try on its side or upside down.

I had to open a big Amsec gun safe one time--the owner admitted he had removed the inner cover over the door and them crammed a big plastic box of jewelry inside, which as it turned out had blocked the bolts from opening. We pushed it onto it's back & it opened right up. Fortunately there were enough big guys around to stand it back up again afterwards

A little Strange you see the Pins on the Opening side, was originally thinking it was in hinge side, and would say lay over on Hinge side Up, then Tapping on safe so bolts may drop if disconnected from the retracting mechanism.
Opening 1" and seeing pins must not be in the holes, would try to push those pins in with Hammer and punch?
Door would need to be pushed in to reduce binding in the holes? Good Luck
