Early 1900's Victor 3-1/2 Info

Postby OldVictor13 » 3 Nov 2021 23:36

Hello Members,
I recently picked up a Victor Safe from an auction. It's locked with no combo.
It's my understanding the safe hasn't been opened since the 1950's.
Like most new people to this forum, I want to try to figure out how to open it w/o causing any damage.
I know that's no easy task, so before anything, I'd like to get as much info as possible about this safe.
It's 31" tall x 20 wide x 22 deep, which leads me to believe it's a Model 3-1/2. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I got that info from a 1910 catalog in the Cincinnati Library Archives.
The dial lock patent says OCT, 2, 88 with a serial # of 142452.
It's a hundred number dial, so I figure it's from the early 1900's. Is that correct?
I'm frustrated I can't find any info on the serial number.
I'm also assuming it's a L4,R3,L2,R1(to stop) sequence. Again, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Here's some pics and please feed me with knowledge. Bear in mind, I'm as green as they come, but I do have an engineering and machining background,
Thank You!! And let me know if I need to supply any more info.

This is an amazing find. I do mean the catalogue. I don't think it is known here that such a treasure exists. I have put here a link:

https://digital.cincinnatilibrary.org/d ... 463/rec/70

The lock is a Yale L-2 or L-1. Dialling direction is the usual. So your assumption is correct.

Not as amazing as the catalogue. :D

The Victors are quite common, but yours is in good shape. Definitely a nice safe to have. I do like their Yale locks, because they are such a simple design. Unfortunately being in Germany means I have seen them only on photos.

Martin I have not looked into the library selection of catalog information. But the greater Cincinnati area was a hot bed for manufacturing. I might guess that many companies are represented there?

Great find though!

I have found ten (edit) Victor catalogues, three (edit) Alpine catalogue, two Mosler images and sadly nothing else.

Ive been busy finishing out my new shop and haven't spent any time with the safe.
I printed the 100 combos to try that was posted in another part of this form, but have only tried a few of them so far.
Good luck and let me know if you learn anything that may help
