Is it possible to take apart Murphy wall safe wheelpack?

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Is it possible to take apart Murphy wall safe wheelpack?

Postby bellcr8v » 9 Dec 2021 21:36

Disassemble and reassemble a Murphy combination wheel pack?
I need to see the pin configuration… and determine where they are positioned.
I think there is one pin on the driver snd one pin on the bottom wheel. My guess is there is one down snd one up on each of the other two wheels.

Has anyone ever taken one apart or seen the pins?
Are they 180 degrees apart or offset?

Any help appreciated.

[EDIT: I added to your title so it was more meaningful and searchable in the future.]

Murphy Bed Company wall safes are not so common that a bunch of us have the wheelpacks sitting around on a shelf or in a parts bucket. I sold my safe, so I can't answer your question, and I am not sure if anyone else has one of those safes and would be willing to take the wheel pack apart.

You should search for the patent drawings if there are any. They may show an exploded view, or at least have some language that would describe the operation which might tell you what you need to know.

I uploaded the original installation instructions that were included with the safe I used to have.

Thanks. Very kind of you.

Unfortunately didn’t help with my quest for info.

Ifound the patent but unable to order on the govt website.

I have two of those safes, but like you said, can’t afford to ruin one.

Onward thru the fog...

The only thing I had to go on was the patent date, Jan 3 1922.
I searched by the date and got 847 patents.
I had to open each one at a time. Took about 3-4 hours but
persistance paid off.
However I could only get the first page.
Somehow, MartinHewitt got the rest?
Thanks for all the help.
... however, the lock shown is not exact but much useful info.
I suppose some iterations occured after publishing.

I just took your patent number, prefixed US and entered it into Google patent search. Provides a nice link for quick patent access for all.

Btw. Murphy itself apparently didn't have any safe related patents.

You're very tenacious! Where did that date come from, was it stamped on the parts or on the combination dial face?

Thanks,

I've got a Murphy wall safe, but it's all together and working.
If there's anything I can tell you from the exterior, let me know.
