Copying an Abloy Profile key from a picture

Postby Phaseseeker » 16 Dec 2021 14:21

I bought an old '90s public payphone from eBay that uses an Abloy Profile lock cylinder, but the guy that sold it didn't have the key; I could buy one on eBay, but it would cost more than I paid for the phone, and I'd prefer to avoid drilling the lock both because it would damage the phone and because I'm not even sure I could drill it (the cylinder has an hardened steel anti-drill disc). There's plenty of pics of the key online (see for example https://www.ebay.it/itm/254869988287), so I was wondering if there's any way of extracting the bitting from them like you can do with normal pin tumbler keys. Forgive me if it's a stupid question but I don't know anything about the way these keys are cut and this was the only thing I could think of. My only other option would be to pick it but I've never picked a disc detainer and from what I understand picking one of those would be pretty hard.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Not all Abloy keys have the same bitting.

Or, for that matter, the same key. If I recall correctly I think Abloy has been through something like 5 or 6 generations of their system since they started.

But to answer your original question, probably fairly difficult. Abloy key blanks are much harder to find than most standard pin tumbler systems, and require special equipment to cut them (which is also restricted). Unless you have fairly advanced machining skills and can mill a blank from stock and then mill the bitting onto it, even if you could extract the code you'd have a very tough time actually implementing it onto a working key.

I could propably cut it if shown a couple pictures of the key. As Gordon said I think there are more than one Abloy Profile phone keys.
These keys are still used on some higher security solutions, so I don´t cut keys from every photo. A couple months back I was asked to cut a Profile key from picture and the they called it a "key to kingdom". I asked more about it and was told its a masterkey to Paris metro system (thats subway for ya muricans). I kindly refused.
