first lever lock picked

I was given a small two lever lock. I had to make a tension tool. Lucky for me, I saw the instructions in the Foley Belsaw coursebook and grabbed some .053" piano wire, bent and cut it to shape. I managed to find the bolt at the far end of the lock.
I used the smallest hook I had--again, homemade.
The lever lock has false gates (see second pic) which made it a little harder.

Did you do it blind or watched through opening? Cover with tape next if not, Good Job.

The first time I didn't really know how it worked at all, and I probed it open through the observation hole and pushed on the bolt with my fingers.

Then I made the tension wrench and picked it while watching through the observation hole.

After that I did it blind--which took a lot longer than I thought it should, even though I knew what was happening (or so I thought). I had a "surprise" opening the first time, which is nice, but doesn't really tell you what you did right. The times after that I think I understood better what my pick was feeling. The false notch threw me off for awhile.
