Picking help?!

Postby Renoman1195 » 28 Jan 2022 13:44

I am very new at lock picking. I have purchased a Southhord beginner’s set and a Peterson eagles nest. I have raking down like nobody’s business. Single pin picking is killing me?! I can find the pins with no problem. I just can’t seem to get that click? Or snap. Do I use more tension while single pin picking? Or less. I’m only picking master locks at the time. I can pick it lol all of these ways. Just can’t seem to single pin pick. Any tips would be awesome!

I found that lighter tension worked for me. Sometimes with light tension,IMO, you won't hear it but you might feel it. Keep trying.

I found the easiest way to learn how much tension you need to use in the beginning was to take apart a house lock (kwikset/schlage, etc) and remove a few top & bottom pins (and the springs) --that way you only have two pins left in the lock, which makes it easy to pick. Once you learn a good starting tension & you can easily pick two pins, add a third & so on. In the beginning I never thought I would be able to pick a house lock with all five tumblers in it but in time it happened & for me most of it was learning about tension

While all are saying lighter tension, when I watch Lockpicking Lawyer, their is a loud distinctive "CLICK",
when I do it, sounds like a Marshmallow hitting the floor.
Wonder if he has Mic right on the Lock?

It depend also of the lock, if is new if is used if is a training lock etc..... if you really what to hear that nice click then put more tension but in real life is not ok to put to much tension....

I'm a beginner myself, but what I have found useful is to put a heavy amount of tension on it first. This helps find the binding pin as it won't budge. Then I will loosen the tension slowly until I feel the pin move into place. I normally get a good click this way. Then I'll repeat the process.

Just know that light tension is probably easier on the life of the lock and your picks. But after breaking a pick and 2 locks I've developed a feel for the right amount of tension and feedback so I'm slowly moving away from this method.
