Is this a thing? (are there times you may HAVE to overset?)

I have managed to be able to consistently pick a lock that had been giving me trouble. It turns out I was over setting a pin. So I discovered that pulsing the tension to let the pin drop would lead to it opening.

But now I am finding that without over setting it and using that trick I can't get it open. So my question is are there times you may HAVE to overset it to get it to open?

Its not unusual to "reverse pick" a lock. You cant really SPP it, but you cant overset with hard tension, then rake as you ease the tension.

Not sure if I understand what you're saying here.

I'm talking about, let's say... You find pin 5 is binding so you set it at the shear line. Then none of the other pins bind and none can be set but the lock won't open. But lets say you OVERSET pin 5. Now pin 4 IS binding and you can set it. No other pins bind after that so you pulse the tension and pin 5 drops to the right place opening the lock.

Like, maybe pin 5 HAS to be overset to get pin 4 to set?

I had this on the Euro cylinder lock on my patio door. When starting lock picking it was an easy lock to train on... 5 pins and no security pins. Changed to a high security lock since realising just how weak it really was.

Anyway, pin 2 always oversets, I can't get past it without it oversetting just by the shank of the pick however the pins behind continue to set, then I release the tension and as pin 2 pops up the lock opens.

I don't think it actually properly oversets to begin with though, I suspect that I am gradually oversetting as I move to the back of the lock and by chance as I get to the back I have fully overset pin 2. I never gave it too much thought to be honest, just after reading your post I remembered the symptoms from this lock.
