ILCO 008A and 37MC cutter?

Postby Peter Martin » 2 Apr 2022 19:44

Before I buy a 37MC cutter and try this, I was wondering if anyone attempted it already. I presume it must work.
The only hang up I can think of is the key guide--it is shaped like the 23RF cutter and doesn't have a profile like the 37MC.
It may make no different, but it also might not follow a Depth & Space key properly.

[quote="tomcat"]The ILCO 008 Mini Might key machine is a nice starter machine and here is a tip on how to get the most out of it!
You can convert the ILCO 008 Mini Mite Key Machine to act as a code cutting machine. This simple conversion can allow you to both duplicate and use space and depth keys for the purpose of cutting code keys. It is a very good starting point for beginners since it is cost effective and easily transpor
The ILCO 008 uses a 1/2" diameter shaft and typically comes with a 23RF cutter blade. Replace the 23RF with a 37MC. This is considered a "compromise" cutter blade that will provide a 45 degree angle with a .25 flat.

1. The key guide really should be exactly the same profile as the cutter.

2. The Rotary File cutter is designed to be used at a slower speed than the Milling Cutter' The RF should not be used with a faster motor. The RF can actually be used on hand turned key machines such as the English Mancuna, (1970's) or an original Yale hand operated duplicator.

3. The Milling Cutter does require a faster speed to maintain proper and expected cutting results. Using the Milling Cutter at a slower speed is asking for broken teeth, hangups, and possibly pulling the key blank out of the jaws or splitting it along the grooves.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

I have several Ilco 008 machines & have used them as code cutting machines with the 23RF cutter that comes on the machine, it just takes a bit of practice. As Dad used to say, you can't turn a Chevy into a Cadillac

I have a 008 mounted in a Platt case that I have used for decades with the 23RF and guide keys. Works well as long as you are careful making the angle cut on the flat side of the cutter.
