Pay Telephone - The (lock) inner workings

Postby Gantry » 20 Jul 2018 17:06

A few people have asked me to do another post on how the pay phone locks work and secure the "gut's" of the phone as well as the money box. If you haven't already seen it I did a post on the rebuilding of the Medeco locks that it uses ( https://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=65050 ).

Here is what the inside where all the electrical & mechanical parts are located. The main body holds most of the items but I'm showing the key pad side as this is where the lock is. I have removed the key pad so you can see the locking mechanism better:

Image, Image

These pictures above shows it in the locked position. The next picture is in the un-locked position. Once you've unlocked it you still need to use the "T" key to move the lugs.

Image, Image

When to 2 halves are mated the lugs interconnect here.

Image

Ok, Now the coin box lock. The keyed part of the lock actuality is mounted inside the main part of the phone while the locking mechanism in on the inside cover.

Image , Image

Here is what it looks like in the locked and unlocked positions (note that when the lock is in-gauged it has 4 locking lugs).

Image, Image

As with the top half of the phone, when you've unlocked it with the key, you still need to use the "T" key to throw the bolts

Image

And finely, here is the phone put all back together.

I hope you enjoyed this little look inside the inner workings of a pay phone. I tried to make it so everyone could at least get a basic idea of how the locking systems works. It took me a few hours to put together between taking the pictures, editing them, and than writing up a post, so let me know what you think. BTW, believe it or not the phone weighs over 43 lbs (19.5 kilos)!

I remember as a little kid wondering what the inside of a pay phone looked like. All these years later, and I *finally* get to see!

Huge thanks, and very well done!

I actually saw a Pay phone yesterday in the Keys. First time in a long time, except 1 about a month ago in Miami. Looked like Initially damaged by a hurricane. Conduit broke off, wire hanging. I'm sure they would like the eyesore removed, If I did, I would likely be arrested, wanted the lock mechanism to tinker with.
May even have money? Likely be there next year?

Thanks for sharing! I love seeing how (mechanical) things work inside. As a kid one of my (and of my parents') favorite games was to give my a broken old machine like a vcr or an alarm clock together with a bunch of screwdrivers and tell me to take it apart. I got to see what's inside and they got an hour of (mostly) peace and quiet :D

Thought I was the only one who did that! My son loves it.

I suspect it's probably a more common theme among people here than you'd think. My dad did that with me as well, and it's how I first got my love of all things mechanical/electrical. Now I get to do it with my kids, and it's just as much fun from the other side. In fact my son (3 years old) just helped me pin up his first cylinder a few days ago. I had given him a ring of real (but old/non-working) keys to play with when he was just a little guy, and lately he's been a bit disappointed that none of them actually did anything. So we found and old cylinder in the parts box, and he helped me set it up to one of his keys, then we built a little base and mounted it for him. Couldn't be more proud. :-D

Thanks for the inside look. I was wondering how they worked. I can imagine they had to really be over built as $40 was a days wages back then.

Great work, thanks! Brilliant to get to see the inside. You should consider putting something together for 2600 magazine. I'm sure they would be interested.

I can't tell from the pictures if the coin operation flips a switch, or if it's just wired directly to the computer. If it's just a switch, it wouldn't be hard at all to override it and use it as a land line phone. Either way, you can put in a bluetooth connector (I've used the WE99JF7K15 in the past) and get the phone to work via your cell phone, so you can connect or disconnect from it, but when connected, you can make and receive your cell phone calls from this phone. Let me know anything you find out about the coin operation because this could be a fun project for me too!

This sound intriguing! Although I have some basic electronics skills that project would be beyond me. I'm pretty sure that the switch was (is) electronic. It was upgraded so that when you pick up the handset you get
a dial tone and can make a call (no money needed, though you can still put money in if you want). It of course plugs into a standard wall jack. We no longer have a house "land line" and only use cell phones so I can no longer
us it other than for aesthetics. If it's some thing you want to pursue please PM me and we can talk some more.

Wow! This is extremely helpful! A friend let me borrow a payphone that was mounted on his house so that I could try to pick the locks. I thought they were 29A/30C or some similar variant, but it turns out the locks aren't behaving the way I expected. I suspect they have somehow been defeated internally. I thought I just needed to unlock the locks to get into the case and didn't know that the T-key was required. Looks like I need to make a T-key!
