Great Grandfather's Mosler Safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Great Grandfather's Mosler Safe

Hi "This Old Safe" Group,

Upon the passing of my Great Uncle, I recently inherited my great-grandfather's Mosler safe that sat in his post-office for many years in Florida in the early 1900s.

I am excited to have it and the combination still works - I would love to know a bit more about what model it may be and roughly what year it was made.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thank you all,

I have a suggestion. If you live in a town big enough to have a safe and vault shop, have them come inspect, clean, and lube the lock and door locking mechanism. Maybe shim up the hinges if they are worn. Pick his brains for the particular model and any interesting facts or history on it. A service call not involving an opening shouldn't cost more than maybe $100 or a bit more. It's like a 15 minute job, most likely. A bit of attention and preventative maintenance every 20 years or so might prevent a lockout some day, and then you could be looking at spending some serious semolians to get it open and back in service.
