Picking a door I cannot remove the security "shift"

Postby NewBies 10983 » 20 Sep 2022 14:08

I all,
I'm new here and I would like to thank you all in advance for your answers and tips.
First of all I must specify what I mean about the "shift" I described in the object.
The lock I want to pick is a door lock, like all doors, it has the possibility of inserting an additional level of security - once the door is closed - by turning the key 360 degrees to the right. Doing this, a small iron plate fits into a specially created slot in the wall, or in the door frame. This is to avoid a simple opening with a credit card or hospital plate. Now the door lock is similar to other door locks I have already opened but, with this double rotation I manage to pick the lock but the cilinder rotate for 180 degrees and, after that, it stops again! I can hear the noise of security plate moving but it cannot re-enter for all his extension because the cilinder doesn't rotate anymore. Is it possible that the pistons are in both side of the lock (at top and at bottom)? Hope it's clear, can someone help me? I lost the key and this is the only door in my house I can't open.
Thanks a lot

Sounds like he has 180'd the lock and the driver pins have fallen into the keyway blocking rotation.

+1

Sounds like a complete newbie doing things he should not be doing like picking locks that are in use.

What do you mean that I have broken the lock? I didn't do anything special I just pick gently with a rack picker and the lock turn left but I canno't turn it more than 180 degrees. Surely I'm not an expert (differently I didn't ask here Evan) I have a set buy on amazon for 12 euros.
Anyway the "door" is one meter door on my garage and my grandfather lost the keys maybe 15 years ago.. and ask me to try it before break it down.

There are someone can explain me way this happend instead of say "a newbies try to open a door and he failed".

As I said I never manage to open door with the pin to pin technique. I always use the rack gently up and down and with some patience I manage to open different door, in someone I manage to remove even the "shift", in other not. I had the same problem with the door of my neighbor's apartment, it turns 180 degrees and no more, but two hours later he came back and open the door with his key, nothing was broken..

Thanks anyway, if I can I will post a picture for who wants to help or teach me how to improve.

The answer to your question was already provided. you 180'd the lock.

You have to understand how a lock works in order to understand what one-eighty-ing a lock means.

see if this helps

Ah ok! I didn't know what "180'd" a lock means and I thinked is not an answer.

Thanks a lot, I already read the link you provided but my problem seems different fron the guys who stuck the lock.. if I put my rack inside the keyway I effectively feel the pin but I can quietly turn the lock left to the original position! But I prefer to don't do this, if so, I should restart from the beginning. Anyway I will try with GeorgiaGin tips: try to lift up the pins witj the rear of my rack and gently try to turn the locks.

Thanks a lot

That is exactly how you deal with a lock that has beebn 180'd.

Thanks all guys for your support, I try the solution of pushing up the pins with rear of my rack but that lock doesn't want to turn a cm more (to the right).

Therefore I want to show you what's happend and I recording a little video. The video is here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GxMOa9LPGOdMYjHF730jMgQBRpe_Ue3f/view?usp=sharing.

I would like to show you also the rack and the tensor I have used: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oXY0RA8iyKppEUrzXv3iF7rNdidKUDnK/view?usp=sharing

It's not important to open that door.. Surely I will find just dust inside.. but I don't want to give up and my grandpa is loosing patience and he's ready to proceed with crowbar!!

Thanks a lot! :D

a quick correction, it is spelled rake (or the act of raking a lock), not rack. this may help you find better results when searching here or on youtube
