Mosler Safe

Good Morning Gentlemen. I need a little help with this old safe. This safe belongs to a lifelong friend of mine that now lives in China. His father passed away last year. This old Mosler is in their old insurance building. The building is in the process of being sold. His mother is still living and I have been helping her with things as such. We have found what we believe is the combination to the safe. Along with 7 other combinations to various safes he has/had. Can you guys give me the opening sequence or any other information you think I might need to know so we can get this thing open. Mom thinks there is some family heirlooms and such inside. Thank you very much for any insight you can give.

Hi, This is likely a 3-wheel lock. In this case its opening sequence is like with a modern Dargent & Greenleaf's 6730. There are nice videos on YouTube explaining the 4th left, 3rd right, 2nd left and right to stop sequence

Thank you very much for the reply. So this is a 3# lock?

This is a Mosler something-302 or something-402, which existed in multiple flavours and their differences are not relevant for your current problem. The something-302 has 3 wheels, the something-402 4 wheels. I have seen 4-wheel locks only on vault doors so far, so I am pretty convinced, that your lock has only 3 wheels.

This video explains it nicely the opening of a 3-wheel lock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEYjgOFKR1U

If your combination has as a fourth number around 90, then it is probably not part of the combo and you should try the first three numbers like in a 3-wheel lock. But you can also try all four numbers like in a 4-wheel lock, just in case. I don't think there is a description on youtube, because the are so rare, but the modification is simple. Dial the first number with 5th to the right and the remaining numbers like in the above video.

Thanks,

As Martin replied the SAVTA website will help you find a qualified safe technician. Please note not all locksmiths are qualified to work on safes, some are good, some are not.

There is nothing near you, and the closest ones are in Memphis TN.
