SmartKey Gen 2 cutaway

Enjoy watching chips pile up as you make a sweet cutaway lock? Do you have a youtube channel showing off your new mini lathe? Get excited when you buy a new X-Y table? When someone says Bridgeport, do you perk up? Then this is the forum for you!

SmartKey Gen 2 cutaway

Made a rough cutaway of a SmartKey last night. It operates smoothly during normal use and the reset process, which I'm pretty happy about :) The reset process, when done 90º left, does a decent job of showcasing the interaction between the wafers and the guide pins, which is cool. Weak points are definitely the insufficiently large window to see sidebar/wafer interaction, and the lack of a cutout to see the spring and gap on the back side of the sidebar housing, both of which I'll be puzzling on today.

Nice!

Very nice! Never seen a cutaway of a SmartKey. Might have to send you a core to cut.

Thanks folks! I have a soft spot for quirky and failure-prone lock designs  I made a cutout window for the sidebar housing spring and either the design or execution seems to have weakened the spring and it doesn't return nicely anymore. Dang.

Gordon, I'd be happy to send you one, just fair warning that the finish is very rough, and I don't think I could make this work with a gen 3.

Have you played with the old Schlage SecureKey locks?

I haven't, although I do have a SecureKey cylinder that I found a while ago. Sounds like I should dig it out!

Made a few more cuts to showcase the spring-loaded sidebar housing and deepen the window around the sidebar/slider interaction. I think I'm going to call it Good Enough to demonstrate the basics

It looks great. It shows the functions of the lock well.
