Best door lock (key or digital)

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Best door lock (key or digital)

Postby srnim » 31 Dec 2022 8:48

Hello,

I've been watching tons of lockpickinglawyer videos and I feel like everything I could buy is cheap crap. I know he is a very experienced lockpicker and not every intruder has that expertise. I know if someone want to enter my apartment it will enter at some point.

Here in Spain are a lot of criminals which bump and pick the door locks to rob, and some others just enter to take your house as their house.

I would like to know if there's a system (like Bluetooth or RFID, but the ones I've found are bypassed easily) or any strong door lock that could be a total challenge for experienced intruder and a no-no for common robbers.

Thanks!

Hello,

Do you already have the lock mechanism that slides into a mortise pocket of a wooden door? Are you just loooking for the profile cylinder to insert into an existing lock case?

Look into TESA SmartAir if you want to go digital.

There are many choices of mechanical cylinders, but some as you already kmow can be bumped or snapped. Let us know if you just need the cylinder or entire lock assembly.

Thank you,

Hello,

Thank you for your time.

I currently have an arcu lock which is like 20-30y old. I know that lock is really insecure.

That TESA smart is not easily hacked with things like flipper zero? I really don't know if RFID (like Bluetooth) has different protocols and this is not a weak one.

Thank you again and happy New year

I do not know if the RF technology in the TESA lock can be hacked with a Flipper Zero.

If you are worried about bumping or picking attacks on mechanical locls *and* also worried about cyber attacks with devices such as the Flipper Zero, then it might be time to layer your security by adding good lighting around your property and entrances, a monitored alarm system with alarm warning decals on the doors and windows, security cameras, and then install both digital and mechanical locks on your door(s) along with reinforced hinges, longer hinge screws, and new deadbolts or mutli point lock systems. You could go as far as installing a steel door, but at some point the amount of money spent to protect the target will start to outweigh what you are trying to protect. You may also start to attract attention and bad guys might start to think there is something really valuable inside.

The idea being that installing all the things listed above would deter an attack from happening in the first place, or at least slowing attackers down enough so they find a quicker or easier target than sititng at your door for 10 minutes trying to get in only to set an alarm off when they open the door.

I don't think any one lock or technology type is going to stop attackers as you can always play the game of "but what if" example: but what if they attach a chain to the door and rip door out with a truck? How do you even guard against that kind of scenario? You know what I mean?

Are you just wanting to know which profile cylinder to buy or are you wanting to replace the entire door locking mechanism?

You may find this video useful:

You may want to contact a local security consultant in your geographical area who would be well versed in the types of attacks common where you live and the best methods currently being utilized to prevent them.

Good luck,

Hello,

I got your point and that's true, the "what if" is eternal.

About the RFID I am more concerned about this kind of vulnerabilities https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rXuWnwSYC5Y

And yes, I am more into buying a good cylinder which cannot be opened in seconds. Here in Spain the bumping, picking and impresioning methods are the most common.

Maybe a combination of that TESA lock with a gold mechanical one.

I really appreciate your time and help. Thanks

Security Systems Work Very Well if done Properly.
Hardwired is Better than Wireless. You can Tamper your Motions, Photo Beams, Mats.... Combo IR/ Microwave Motions Greatly reduces False Alarms. I like to put a Second Reed Switch on Entry Doors, not to close to magnet. Put on a 24 hr zone. And if it senses someone placing a Magnet near your door contact trying to defeat it. You can transmit signals by RF, IP, Cellular, Dial up(Pots line). Siren will inform neighbors. 2 sirens on opposites of building can be each fused with Small Fuses, output with a Larger Fuse, determine size by devices used. This way if someone cuts the Siren Wires or shorts Bell Output. Other Siren Will still sound. I Like the DSC Power Series. Has Programmable outputs. One customer I installed 7 wireless water sensors, and 8 Hardwired. If any of the Toilets, Sinks, Water Heater, Washing Machine, Dishwasher, Jacuzzi Tube, I program to trigger output, which shut off the Water with a 1" Ball Valve( 12 volts), Elk WSV2, within 2 seconds of a leak detected. I also had the Smoke and Heat Detectors Detectors trigger output 2, which shuts off AC, so it doesn't blow smoke through the house, or give More Oxygen to the Fire. If forced to Disarm system, you can use a Duress Code, With an Intruder, it appears you Disarmed the system, which it does, but also silently notifies Central System . Unlimited what you can do, PM me if needing to figure Something. Hidden Cameras, a second DVR can give you videos if main one is taken. You can take the Video of the Camera split into 2, 1 to each dvr, if you used Cat 5 or Better Twisted Pair and Baluns, Theives may follow Coax, but not Category Rated Wiring. The Cloud is an Option.
Actually Today I just found out Alexander Graham Bell invented Twisted wire, which is now alsoTwisted Pairs.
He was also born in Edinburgh as was My Grandfather.
Never would have guessed. Cameras can do a lot. Good to have Cameras to protect each other. Viking Electronics makes a nice Door Bell, Innercom, Camera in a Single or 2 gang Plate, I think Black and White Powdercoat as well Can Communicate in house or Remotely. If you thought you heard something out front, you could monitor or listen wherever you are. Thermal and Laser Detectors are Pretty nice. You don't need Motion for Detection.
With the DSC, you can add a wireless receiver and use Wireless Contacts, Motions. Smokes.....also have a keyfob to arm/disarm the system, for the wife, it can trigger Panic Alarm, can also turn on lights, trigger an output. Couple other usefull things is Notify you of Power Loss. Temperature Exceeded, Anything.
Good Luck
Oh yeah, we have Comcast and Uverse, but they give you no battery backup, never seen included, they are expensive if you buy theirs. You can buy a Different Modem that uses a 12 Volt Supply that plugs in the Back. Hurricanes where I live, this way you can get extremely long Backup with a Car Battery. DVR, same thing. Get one that uses 12 Volts that plug in. You don't want to lose Protection when you lose Power. A time where you need protection most. Good Luck

Unfortunately, no door lock is completely impenetrable. Even the most advanced security systems can be bypassed by experienced criminals. The best way to ensure that your home is secure is to use multiple layers of security. Locks that require more than one key or code to open are a good option. In addition, you can add additional security measures such as motion sensors, security cameras, and alarms. Additionally, consider investing in a reinforced door frame, reinforced strike plate, and deadbolts. These types of measures will help to deter burglars and make it more difficult for them to gain entry.
