Description of auto-lock

Postby Ericdhvac » 17 Jan 2023 12:57

Hello problem solvers, first post here.

We had an old door with equally old lockset that I had added a simple rfid reader and 12vdc door latch, it worked well for us because we just kept the door locked which with this particular lockset allowed for the inside to stay unlocked, is this what auto-lock refers to?
We have replaced the door and lockset with a Baldwin which my wife likes but when it’s locked the inside is locked as well, so to leave we have to twist the thumb turn, open the door, then turn it back, seems silly to me but after looking at many different models at box box stores I can’t seem to find one that stays unlocked inside.
The main problem I have is not knowing what that feature is called….if it even has a name.

Thanks for any advice/ input you guys may have.

I am by no means a lock smith but I think what your looking for in a keyed storage room lock (Keyed on outside and always unlocked inside) Here is a link to one I found on Amazon :
https://www.amazon.com/Dynasty-Hardware-AUG-05-26D-Commercial-Storeroom/dp/B01LYH3ZKE/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=Storeroom%2BLock&qid=1673999404&sr=8-7&th=1

Hope this helps you on your quest.

I think the terminology you're looking for is called the lock's "function." Allegion has definitions for common lock functions, if any of those feel like the right fit.

Thanks for the info, that list of definitions is nice and the types of locks have standardized codes.
Looks like the store room lock comes closest though it’s mostly commercial and doesn’t appear to give the option to unlock the exterior if wanted.
I found online that Baldwin has a series called Estate that is listed as having the emergency exit function, this is their description of that function:
“Built with the emergency exit function, allowing the door to be operated from the inside while remaining locked on the exterior.”
That’s what I was looking for.

Glad you found something :) I'll have to remember that the Estate series has that.

If you want the outside locked, inside unlocked, but also want the option of leaving the outside unlocked when you so desire, then what you want is a classroom function lock.
