How to pick a lock like this ?

Postby zweimeter » 31 Jan 2023 15:07

hello, i´m absolute beginner :D

just trying out myself on padlocks which i found in my home. shockingly, how easy the common locks i have can be raked
i tried my bicycle lock which key seemed to be unpickable for me. a few minutes later it was open. ( https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=ht ... AdAAAAABAJ )

as a trail camera owner, i tried to pick my locks for the cameras to know how safe they are

-i have a "burg wächter" cable lock wioth pin code. this is decoded by me in less than 2 minutes or something like this. i was shocked !!!!
-another lock i own is the masterlock python cable lock. this took aboiut a minute to find a fitting rake from the set and it was open. another shock for me
-now i am trying the "secacam" cable lock. the key looks insane to me. seems that there must be some rotating dics in the right position or so...i don´t understand the lock and i think it is unpickable for me with a common pick set. so maybe a bit safer lock for my trailcams ? here are some pictures of the lock and key
https://www.secacam.com/de/zubehoer/kab ... tAQAvD_BwE

maybe somebody can tell me the name of this lock type ? or help me to understand its function. and ideas how it could be picked.

sorry for my bad english :)

This is called a disc detainer lock. You can read more about them here: https://www.lockwiki.com/index.php/Disc_detainer. As with any lock, the exact level of security is going to depend heavily on the build quality and security features incorporated by the manufacturer (which will generally be related to the price of the lock). In the worst case, disc detainer locks require special tools and techniques to pick. At the high end, they are about as close to unpickable as you can currently get in a mechanical lock. Read that as: there are a very small number of people in the world that can pick high end disk detainer locks.

Do note that picking a lock is not the only way to remove the lock from the thing locked. The shackle resistance to cutting or other techniques is also important. I'll also note that many trail cams are in plastic cases.
It's a good day when I learn something new.

hello, thanks. i know - a common bolt cutter or battery grinder will open the lock too :)
and sure..the plastik case is often ignored by people.

my trail cams, which are "locked" are in a steel case. sure...this means not it´s safe :D but its a bit more difficult

Good luck (not being sarcastic here, I mean that). These are not easy locks, especially for beginners. Don't be discouraged if you don't get it right away.

A reminder though, these types of locks and the tools to pick them are considered advanced on this forum, so if you want to discuss specific techniques, you'll need to stick around for a while and apply for membership to the advanced section. ;-)

the tool came today....and its a bit too lager for the small secacam lock. so it would has to be grindet a bit
i have also ordered a "glass" lock. but i can´t even open this "toy lock"
wtf....this is really crazy stuff :D absolutely NO feeling in "setting" the right positions of the discs. but maybe i am doing something completely wrong :D

time for me to learn about it in videos :)
