I have an opened safe, what's the combo?

I hope I did this correctly, I think I might be completely wrong about the combo numbers now that I have read some of the post. I am looking at the wheels with a bore scope so when I have a gate in the 12 o'clock position and see what number is at that position on the dial is this correct for that wheel?

Phew! This needs a bit cleaning.

This locks has so called mesh change wheels. The consist of two parts which can be separated, realigned and pressed together for a new combo. The process is basically the same as shown here:

When disassembling put them in order and if possible make photos of the disassembly and the sequence of parts, so that you can reassemble it. Often the wheels are numbered to make reassembly easier.

When reassembling use lube only minimally. Lube attracts dirt and gets sticky or even solid in the long run, which can prevent proper operation of the lock.

Hello,
I have received an old Chubb Safe.
Door is open but locked.
When I undo the screw I can get the small backing plate to turn slightly, so I can see the wheels.
I can spin the dial and figure out where the gates are, but this at the 6oclock position.
Will the latch/gate be at the 12 o'clock position or offset.
And is what is the a trick to removing the plate completely?

Hi, The cover plate should be only held by that one screw and you should be able to pull it of. Maybe the paint is sticking it together?

I didn't get photo, but the plate moves when the screw is out, but it pivots upwards slightly from one end. I'll get some more pictures when I get another chance to play with it.

It might have a locked on back cover (LOBC). The are quite uncommon, because they are inconvenient at times. Can you show a photo of the dial?

Hm. I can't find online a photo of a LOBC. This one is the best I can find:

This is not a LOBC, but LOBCs were made for this lock. You see on the left of the cover some kind of stump. A LOBC would have this much longer. It goes into the square hole on the left side of the lock body. To remove the cover you need to slide the cover to the right ...

Actually, maybe you just try to slide your cover to the left (towards the lock bolt). Maybe this is the trick you needed and it isn't a LOBC.

.... and now back to the LOBC .... The long stump must pass into the space of the wheels, which need to have their gates positioned there to make this possible. So there would be an opening index on the lower half of the dial ring where the combination would be dialed to position the wheels that the cover can slide.

I got it sorted.

The plate was LOBC. And needed all three gates openings in the right spot.... I flunked it and figured out combination.

How do I date safe?

My feeling would be 1960s +/-, but I don't have much info about dating safes. You could ask at https://www.antique-locks.com as there are a few UK safe experts and might have knowledge about Australian Chubbs too.
