Old Safe ID and new combination (1 of 4)

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Old Safe ID and new combination (1 of 4)

I bought an old bank, built in 1900 there are 2 walk-in vaults inside, and 2 safes here is a picture of the safes inside the main vault, its locked, any ideas on getting it open and/or resetting the combination would help or who I should call?

Trying to find a model# or some sort of information on this safe and a direction to go in with getting it open and using it.

Dials says The MOSLER Safe Co. and on the top handle it has the #23847

Hello and thank you for sharing your photos and question with us.

Unfortunately, old safes aren't like new modern day products where you can look up the PDF file of the User Manual if you know the item's Model number.

These safes are the real deal and are meant to keep out everyone other than the person with the combination. There is no easy trick that we can teach you in order to turn the dial and listen for some clicks clicks and have it open in 15 minutes.

To open these safes, a real safe technician (not just some random local locksmith or some random "local" locksmith you find on google who usually isn't local or even a real locksmith) would be the best person to contact. They could either try some test combinations, they might put an auto dialer on the safes and the machine will dial every possible combination until the locks open, they could try to manipulate them by turning the dial with their fingers and taking some careful measurements, or they would drill a 1/4 inch or smaller bore hole into the door and then they would insert a rigid borescope in order to see the combination wheels inside so they can then turn the dial and align the wheels while watching them turn through the borescope.

To find a safe and vault technician in your area visit [url]https://savta.org/[url] and enter your ZIP code. You can also stop by local brick and mortal locksmith shops in your area and ask if they have a qualified safe and vault technician who can open a Mosler screw door safe without destroying it.

if you try to turn the big handle, does it turn a certain amount in either direction?
If the big handle does not move at all, does the dial with the Mosler logo turn freely in either direction?

If you want to have a quick go at it, turn the dial Right so that you pass by 50 at least 4 times around, and stop on 50 the 5th time around, then turn the dial Left slowly and see if it stops dead anywhere, if not, stop it at 0 and then try to turn the big handle. then keep turning the dial past 0 to about 25 and see if the dial stops or keeps letting you turn it back 25.

Good luck, and thanks for sharing such nice old safes with us!

thank you for the info, i have a TL30s safe and there are only 2 places in town who could work on it, i know its a very small group, and the link https://savta.org/ no longer exist, I will try that tomorrow when i remove the old teller safes, would love to pick your brain more as there are 2 vaults and another safe, the vault on the 1st floor only has a # on the handle and body but has a sticker on the inside of the door that says LeFEBURE and a serial# on the door 1/2 way down looks like an older style safe deposit box key lock

Main Vault:
looks like a English mint mark almost and 828 on the door
on the handle mabye an "A" mint mark then 12932
the knob says Diebold Safe & Lock Company - Fatentel May 23 1871
