ID of unmarked lock

Postby jwptrek » 6 Sep 2023 15:43

I found a lock along the road near my work. It's brass with a shackle that is likely unhardened steel, chrome plated. The copper layer under the chrome can be seen through the scratches. The shackle is magnetic. The shackle was bent when I found it, and I was able to unbend it fairly easily. It now locks. Looking in the keyway, it appears to have wafers, not pins. There are pins sticking out both sides of the body near the bottom. Only the one on the left side of the lock in the image is visible. The body of the lock is 1.5" wide x 1.25" tall at the lower part of the brass x 0.592" thick. The higher part of the brass is 2.02" tall. Shackle is 7mm diameter. If I press down on the shackle with it locked, it'll move down nearly an additional 1/4" with a pretty good click. When released, it then pops back to where it was with another click. The cylinder is 0.488" diameter and protrudes from the bottom of the lock by 0.04". The pins sticking out are 0.079" diameter and are magnetic. One sticks out about 0.060" and the other about 0.070". There are no markings of any kind anywhere on the lock. The lock is very easy to pick or zip. I'd like to know more about the lock and possible key type if anyone has any idea. Thanks.

Keyway looks similar to a Fulton hitch lock.

Thanks for the hint. I ended up googling some. It appears that the lock is a Tow Smart coupler lock. The pins out the edge are to hold the plastic trim, which has the lock brand on it. The cylinder sticks out to get past the plastic trim. I assume it came loose from a trailer and lost the plastic when it hit the road. See image below, linked from the Home Depot page for the lock.
