Broke My Lishi But With A Happy Outcome

Postby 108CAM » 19 Mar 2023 6:05

Did some training with my Lishi and the effects of metal fatigue took their toll and the tip broke off but I wasn't upset. In fact, breaking my Lishi has taught me lots of new things about Locksport. Below is a list of everything I learnt from breaking my Lishi.
1. Lishi tools and heavy tension don't mix. Light tension is your friend when picking with a Lishi.
2. It's normal for pins to drop after you've set them.
3. If something is stuck, don't force it. This is what damaged my Lishi.
4. Take your time. There's no rush to get your lock open.
5. Practice makes perfect. Keep trying and you'll eventually get your lock open.

Sorry to hear that you broke your Lishi, but at least it died for a purpose. FWIW I've heard (maybe on this forum, maybe somewhere else) that Lishis really don't like being used as picks; their ideal use is to decode a lock after it's already picked. Not sure how practical that really is, since it's awfully tempting to just go for them, especially on tough locks. An interesting use case might be figuring a way to transfer the depth markings from a Lishi onto a standard pick, thus making it easier to pick the lock with a less expensive/more robust tool...

If that were truly the case, I doubt Lishi would bill themselves as a “2 in 1” tool: pick & decode.
But they do seem delicate nonetheless.
