Biometric Gun Safe Recommendations

My neighbor knows I collect safes and asked me what the best small biometric gun safe is. I don’t have a gun so I have no clue. Any thoughts?

At least you asked for the best and not for a good one. I think LPL reviewed a few on YT.

Tell ya what I accidentally discovered about biometric safe locks--
They don't work for old people whose fingerprints are very shallow

Thanks. I thought there might be “go to” or “standard”. Something like if I wanted a BBQ I would buy a Weber.

Sorry - I hope mine wasn’t a dumb question.

I think the standard in US is Chinese. They are not legal to use here, so I don't have any first hand experience. I hope you will find something acceptable.

Honestly, most gun safes are glorified tin cans that perhaps should not have the words "safe" or "high security" attached to them.

I guess the questions of what kind of security, and how small is small would be the next questions to ask?

The question is too generic. Ask them questions back to refine their criteria:
  • What is their budget?
  • What dimensions would they consider small?
  • What is their threat model?

Money not an issue.

They are looking for something they can mount on their nightstand.

The safe should hold a handgun and ammunition. I believe he has a semi automatic handgun so magazines instead of bullets??

I believe he wants something he can access quickly in the event of a break in and at the same time keep people that shouldn’t be there away from his gun. (Is that what you mean by a threat model?)

It seems from the comments posted above there is no “standard” when it comes to biometric gun safes.

I have one of these but it isn't biometric, your fingers fit into the area where the buttons are. One drawback is the batteries are inside, so you need a backup key when the batteries go dead

I mounted one of these to my bro's night table but it's not biometric either. Instead it uses a simplex style lock

I have one of these mounted under the seat in my truck but it uses a Simplex lock, so not biometric either

I wrote a concise definition of threat models elsewhere:

FranklyFlawless wrote:Threat modelling is about determining what assets you want to protect, what adversaries are interested in them, and what resources and skills they have to dedicate to acquiring it. Distilled to its rawest form, it is about time, and the more time you want to buy yourself, generally, the more expensive it becomes to protect your assets.

We already know what assets require protection: a handgun and its ammunition. We also know that their concern mainly involves people, not house fires. What we do not fully know are their adversaries' capabilities, so ask them about it. There is also some important metadata surrounding this safe: nightstand-mountable; and a quick unlocking procedure.

However, if they are concerned about a break in, they should address improving their home security first before considering a safe; the house exterior is the first line of defense.

Well when I think about a "standard" for safes, I think about SentrySafe, because their brand is most recognized by consumers. They are part of the Fortune Brands Innovations portfolio, alongside Master Lock and American Lock, among others. Here are their products that use biometrics as their authentication method:

https://www.sentrysafe.com/products?lockType=Biometric

However, I cannot necessarily recommend any of these products, even tentatively, without a clear threat model.

I have one similar to the first one. They also make/made it with bio-metrics. Here is the one I have, better price point.

It uses buttons to open, I don't see how it is biometric if it's not scanning a fingerprint?

My understanding is, that this box is available with fingerprints, but he has the version without, because it has a better price.
