I'd not seen one of these previously and thought others might be interested. You can see how it works on their web site.

What is pathetic is that ALL the spaces must have locks for the thing to work. So that gate is not locked at all in spite of all the locks.

Actually that's not the case. I initially thought that, but spending a little time on the manufacturer's web site I discovered that each lock holder has a sort of set screw in the back that stops their removal. The back is protected by a plate so you can't access the set screw from the back. The set screws did look less durable than the rest of the mechanism.

If you check how it operates, any space without a padlock on it can have the "pin" (in reality, hasp) lifted out so the other hasps can be slid over to allow the gate to be opened.

If they had set screws that prevented removal of those "pins", then the padlocks would be a waste of time, since the set screws would hold the pins in place. If the set screws prevent removal of the pins, then every user would not only need a key to their padlock, they would additionally need a tool to remove the set screws. Nobody is going to want to do that. The set screws are only used when you do not intend to have that particular pin locked with a padlock. But the set screws MUST be removed from each pin that has an operating padlock attached or said pin can not be operated.

I have seen systems like this before, and it is nice in theory, but if someone does not replace their lock there is no longer any security. I am sure there are variants, but this looks to be cookie-cutter for the type of operation needed to open the gate. Look at the instruction card you posted!

But, again, if someone takes off their padlock and leaves it off, the whole system collapses security-wise. Granted, that is always the case with padlocks. However, it also means that everybody is completely dependent on all the other people being vigilant about their padlocks being replaced.

So it seems it's a key management solution, not for any added or specific security scheme?
In the "Why?" video they say it's an alternative to sharing keys between "several independent contractors".

Key Management would be the only purpose of such a device on a gate.
As stated the security is totally compromised if one of the members of the device does not properly secure their lock after each use.

The applications this seems intended for would be shared access roads where multiple interested parties and agencies need access but it is not prudent to share a common key amongst all users. Potential users:

  • Law Enforcement
  • Fire Department
  • Power Company
  • Water Department
  • Various Telecommunications Companies
  • Road/Highway Department (or Public Works)
  • Private land owner

It would make no sense to have to give employees at the various agencies which need access to the gate a key which only operates this specific gate as even the short list above would result in the issuance of several hundred keys to grant access to all persons who might need access. It makes more sense for each agency needing access to the gate to determine its own policy on how to handle access keys and who can obtain them independent from all of the others and be able to manage replacement of their lock independently for whatever the reason without obstructing the access of other authorized parties.

E.G. If the power company loses a key then all parties involved do not need new keys to be issued if the lock then gets changed. Or a private land owner does not need to be given a key which will allow them access to other facilities or gates controlled by others on the list.
