Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

S&G 6741

A few years ago, I was given a 6741 lock that was taken off of a friend's gun safe and replaced with an electronic lock. He told me that he had this done because the 6741 was "giving him trouble." My experience with the 6741 has been very limited. Just recently, I was playing around with it and found that the lever hits the lever stop when the lock is unlocked. It appears that the drive cam is not correct for this lock. In addition the drive cam is brass, and I thought that in the 6741 it would be black. There is also a great deal of slop in the lever making it possible for the lever to over ride the lever stop when the back is off. I suspect that someone has been inside the lock and I did not get the full story. I can not ask my friend for any more information because he passed away from Covid. Any ideas about this issue are appreciated.

Hi, Any photos?

Btw. the initial 6741s had brass drive cams, but of course it might be a wild mix of parts.

I don't have a digital camera to take any pictures. The drive cam is brass, but clearly not the same as found in the 6730. It almost looks too big and pushes the lever way to far out and the lever hits the side of the case. The lock worked at one time, or so I assume!

I suggest to install a new lock. Diagnostics without photos is difficult and as he has issues it is better to play safe to prevent a lockout.

Yes indeed! The lock has already been replaced, but I kept this lock for autopsy. I just can not determine what is going on with it. I really want to understand this failure. I compared the drive cam to the one from a 6730 and they are clearly different, as they should be. They have the same outside diameter, as they should. It is making me a little crazy.

SOLVED! The problem is excessive wear of the little raised area on the bottom of the lever. I confirmed this by adding a thin washer between the lever and the lever screw. That make the lock work. However if that is so worn that the lock failed, the rest of the lock has to be in poor shape. I will not use it again, this was just done as a learning experience.

Mounted in a piece of wood, that'd be a fine lock for someone to use to learn manipulation.
